Marlon Brando has passed away at the age of 80.

One of the most respected actors in the industry, Brando had been suffering from ill health for some time and finally succumbed in an LA hospital.

The massively overweight star, who had been ill for some time, starred in more than 40 films, including 1953's The Wild One in which he starred as an iconic gang leader.

However, to millions of movie fans across the world his defining role was as mafia leader Don Corleone in the 1972 classic The Godfather.

Despite worldwide acclaim, only days ago it was reported that the actor was facing crippling debts of $11 million.

The increasingly reclusive actor was known to be in poor health and earlier this year was seen being pushed in a wheelchair and breathing with the help of an oxygen mask.

One of the greatest Hollywood actors, he lived in a shabby bungalow in west Los Angeles.

His glittering CV included memorable roles as the deranged Colonel Kurtz in Vietnam film Apocalypse Now in 1979 and in the sexually explicit Last Tango In Paris in 1972.

He won his first Oscar for the portrayal of washed-up boxer Terry Malloy in On The Waterfront in 1954, where he uttered the immortal line, "I could have been a contender''.

Early performances in the Fifties included A Streetcar Named Desire, where he played Stanley alongside Vivien Leigh's Blanche in 1951, and The Wild One as rebel biker gang leader Johnny.

Sad news, really. Brando was one of the best actors ever seen on screen. Best means one of the most talented, enigmatic, fascinating, charismatic etc... He was a genius regarding his art. It's a great loss for anybody who's in love with cinema and performing arts in general. I am truly saddened

He was truly one of the greatest. His legacy will live on forever as long as people continue to watch his movies. I know I will, and so will like 5-10 channels having marathons of his movies.

My dad just told me about it this morning. It is quite sad that he was so poor and in bad health these past few years, but I am sure now as he looks back from beyond he is happy of the times when he lived the most, of which I am sure include his times when he did what he seemed to have been born to do... portray such incredible characters in film. Because of that, his legacy of his talent will remain timeless. Thank you, Mr. Brando. You have inspired people like me (who even desire to possibly do a little acting some day themselves) and millions upon millions of other film appreciators greatly. I hope now that you can see just how much. PEACE ALWAYS.
