It's not a "new" movie, but I think we are not so focused on new things in this thread anymore...

Anyway, The Night of the Hunter is one of the scariest movies I've ever watched , and trust me usually movies that are supposed to be scary are not that impressive in my eyes. This one just makes me shiver. It's so very... nightmarish! It's a truly brilliant film, with beautiful direction, cinematography and amazing acting. Robert Mitchum is incredible, one of the best villains ever, and I won't spoil anything, but you must watch it for yourself.

Has anybody seen Sicko? How's that? I've heard contrasting opinions, but in general people saying it's good seem more reliable than those saying it's bad.

It's not "Gannes" (I think you meant Cannes, btw). It won best movie award at the Venice Film Festival.

I've seen Sicko! It's a good film. It's far less political than his last films (well, it is political, but in that way where both right and left can get angry i guess). It's quite sad to watch too, it's an upsetting subject. Well worth watching though.

I saw some good films recently:

- Kamikaze Girls (Shimotsuma Monogatari): This film is hard to describe but I just know I love it (I've been watching it nonstop actually). It's a sort of surreal film about a girl named Momoko who lives in the small country town of Shimotsuma. She doesn't fit in so she chooses to live her life in a fantasy; she wishes she could live during the 18th century Rococo period in France, she wears Lolita dresses from her favorite boutique Baby, The Stars Shine Bright, and eats nothing but sweets. Trying to earn money, she places an ad to sell some bootleg clothing her father used to sell as a yakuza and meets this Yanki (female ganster) named Ichiko. Odd outings and adventure ensues and that's pretty much the whole movie. It's not as stupid as it sounds because it's actually a hilarious and touching film. It's mostly geared towards females (but guys may like it too!) in their teens since the themes are mostly those about life, friendship, and the whatnot. The soundtrack by Yoko Kanno is excellent too.

- Kirikou and the Sorceress (Kirikou et la Sorcière): I had no idea the film came out in 2000 because I've never seen it before till now. It's a great story based off an African folktale about a tiny boy named Kirikou with magical powers who saves his village from an evil sorceress named Karaba. The animation isn't fantastic, admittedly, because it's very flat with a somewhat choppy framerate, minimal use of shading, and the sorts. However, the colors are astounding and the intriguing story (though better in the later half) makes up for the visuals. One thing though: I really wished everyone in the village would die but hey, that's just me.

There are other two pretty decent animated features by the same author of Kirikou, meryl. I think you may like them, if you liked Kirikou. The titles are - not sure in English - Azur and Asmar and Princes and Princesses. What is best about these films is, apart from stories etc., the very unique style. They're very beautiful works to watch, because of their uniqueness. They just have that fairy tale touch animation lacks nowadays.

Just watched Grizzly Man. A sad account on human solitude and need for acceptance IMO.

Thank you! I just checked these out on IMDB and while I couldn't see a photo for Azur and Asmar, the other Princes and Princesses looks quite interesting! I absolutely love silhouette-style animation, it's so mysterious and beautiful. It doesn't seem like these two are available in the states yet but I will definitely check these out when they do. And you're right, innocence of fairy tales are no longer seen anymore...if it is, it's usually parodies or silly things like "Shrek."

I heard this movie isn't very good, that it's too long and boring and the story is cheap, just an excuse for the "hot" scenes between the main characters.

I don't know, apart from the fact there's Tony Leung in it, I don't have great expectations regarding this movie. The only two Ang Lee's movies I liked are Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Eat Drink Man Woman. For different reasons, but they were both ok movies. I was disappointed by everything else he's done, so I'm honestly not sure I can say I'm looking forward to see Lust, Caution.

I'm looking forward to the remake of the shaw brother's Blood Brothers, the pictures I've seen so far look axcellent and very gritty...including Jet Li with a beard.

Omg, I caught the part towards the end on TV a week or so ago! This film looked pretty intriguing and I plan to rent it one day even though I know what happens at the end now.

I haven't seen any movies lately but I did see Burton's "Sweeney Todd" trailer and I'm kinda appalled by it. Hopefully the real thing will be better.

Yeah, Hitchcock is great. I was watching Rear Window the other day, for the 7th time I think, and it still got me interested and thrilled as the first time.

Rear window is an excellent movie, truely one of his masterpieces.

Saw Johnny To's Exciled yesterday, love this movie! Another great movie with a lot of depth.

Rear Window: such great suspense for such minimal plot! Like in Rope, too. I like all Hitchcock's movies with James Stewart in them. Well, in fact I like all James Stewart's movies. I'm a nerd, I know. I only find one reproachful thing in James Stewart: that he was such a brainless Republican. Nobody's perfect.

Of all Alfred Hitchcock's movies I think I've only seen The Birds and Psyco and I found both too disturbing for my taste

Not all his movies are like that. About The Birds... I think you picked the most inexplicable movie of all Hitchcock's filmography, and that's what is mostly disturbing in it. Both titles you mentioned are a bit on the "horror" side, while many others are mostly thriller or crime works, with more focus on plot, with investigation and unveiling the truth as central elements. There's a bit of that in Psycho as well, but it becomes so grotesque and excessive from a certain point on that it really is more horrific than anything else and the interest shifts from understanding "how" and "why" to exploring a human mind.
