Gals: what are they?
I've started reading this manga, called GALS! knowing it was a shoujo involving some pop culture phenomenon in Japan, but still I have not very clear in mind what these gals are. I know it was a trend that is almost dead in Japan, that was popular some years ago, but I haven't got what this was about anyway. Can someone around here give me some more info about gals etc.?

Oh, Super GALS! I've seen merchandise and stuff about it, I haven't read it myself. But, I think it's about this one girl name Kotobuki, Ran (I think in her teenage years?) and her friends. It's just about everyday life and Ran's adventures/experiences. It mostly has to do with fashion and love. I do know that the setting takes place in Shibuya, the very popular county/district in Japan where a lot of young and hip teens hang out. Shibuya is also the place where a lot of shopping places are found as well as cafes, music stores, video game stores, etc. An appropriate setting, if you ask me.
As for Ran and her friends, their outfits/fashion style is what, I think, one would call a ko-gal in Japanese. A ko-gal is a girl (not a woman) who is up on the latest fashion trends, gets her nails done at the priciest manicure shops, hair styled and colored, the whole she-bang of "youthful girliness". They always have to look their best when they go out. The manga is extremely popular in Japan, that they even created an anime. The anime is scheduled to arrive in the US in September. That's all the information I know. I hope this helps.

I like the Super Gals! manga a lot! I haven't seen the anime. It's really nice if you like shoujo, even if not particularly original for people who have read other stuff. It's very interesting to know more about Japanese teenagers, fashion, street style and more. I know Kogals are not very popular anymore in Japan, as the Ganguro (sp?) girls, but I think they had an enormous impact on young people's lives and trends. I've read some books on this and they said more or less the same things you can find in the Gals manga!

Oh well, thanks to both for the explanations! Meiko, if you remember the titles of the books you're talking about, could you please tell me the titles?
