You know this really shocks me that so little people had members of Metallica on there list.I mean Metallica plays sets atleast 2 to 3 times longer than some of the bands these other members belong to and most of the time without headliners.I mean hell you can't really judge a great if you never heard them live or what there capable live. Some of the people mentioned play slower stuff and some play some inbetween stuff but Metallica lets it rip for like 2 hours + sometimes and doesn't take real large breaks, espically lars, who has a truck load of endurance.Anyways I this will be my last thing to bitch about but I felt I should.

Start anywhere. Just pick a band and dload some songs from them. You can usually tell if you like the song in the first minute of it. There are those songs that you listen to once and you think change the station. Then you listen to it again and you think not bad. Then you hear it again and you end up dloading it and listening to it over and over and over.

I guess so. I respect your opinion. I just never thought of him as one of the greatest guitarists.

SSSnake what has endurance to do with technique a shitty guitarist can play for six hours straight but he will still be a shitty guitarist( I'm not saying metallica sucks believe me I've seen them twice and they kick ass). Most bands that play shorter do that cause they think that's the right way short and powerful....Take them by storm!!!! And mostly it isn't an endurance thing how long a band plays... my band could practice/jam for five hours straight but then again we never played longer than one hour sets...so I have to disagree with you on that.

I'm sure that excludes the big breaks you guys probably take too. These guys don't take huge breaks other than for solos.Plus i'm also an instrumentalist dealing with both drums and guitar and i stand by my statement. For the type of music they play it can take alot outta you and not to screw up too.I've seen alot of bands in concert. Some former greats infact, that play short sets that mess up once or twice on easy material. Then we have Metallica who plays for extented lenghts and hardly ever screws up.Oh back to your band thing.I bet your band can play every Metallica song and you know how fast they go and what chords to do along with drumming, bass and stuff like that.

Older metallica is indeed some really fast stuff then again only the first album has some real back to back wrist-wreckers the newer only one or two faster songs. And for the chords stuff it's all basic pentatonic stuff no real challenge there. Most of the songs are played entirely with down strocks, so if you got you're strumming technique right it's not too difficult. Dude believe me I find metallica excellent live they're coming to europe this summer and I'm going to see them once again...but to be honest in an all-time greatest list of musicians they won't be present that much. If it should be a songwriters or entertainers list it should be a different story...

For guitarist I would say Carlos Santana, don't know if you guys would accept that though.

IMO NO, he's a very good guitarist but guys like Vai, Satriani, Beck, Hendrix etc. are IMO a whole different league.
To be honest when it comes to metallica I even like Hetfield's solo work better it's straight pentatonic stuff but it has some great melodic hooks in it. Sssnake have you seen the metallica video where they're showing backstage studio stuff and shit???
You can see Hetfield jamming at a blues bar, he can play some mean blues guitar!!!
But the guys from metallica won't be on my greatest list...but hey that's just my opinion right??

P.S. Check out steve vai's Passion and Warfare if you got the chance and let me know what you think of the guitar work...
