Man, what in the world is this? Are they trying to work me here or something, because as far as I'm concerned this is a calculus problem, and I'm no where near Calc. so I don't know why I have to solve this! Argh!

Anyways, here's the problem:

Q: Is the following equation true: 1 + 1 = 3?
Explain your answer and show your work.

Now... wtf? Seriously. I know this is not true, but I don't know how to prove it.

Anyone here good at math? I'm sure everyone here is better than me. Please help!

So far, I have this:

Givens: X=1;Y=1

X=Y
X^2=XY
X^2 - Y^2 = XY - Y^2

...

And that's it. Am I on the right track? Oh, man... I'm SO lost.

Here is how I see it: X+Y=Z

If X=1 and Y=1 and Z=3, would the above work. Of course not, because than if X+Y=Z worked, then Z-Y=X or Z-X=Y would both have to be true.

Z-Y=X
3-1=1 (false)

Z-X=Y
3-1=1 (false)

I got those math problems algebrically (sp?).

X+Y=Z
X-X+Y=Z-X
Y=Z-X
Z-X=Y

X+Y=Z
X+Y-Y=Z-Y
X=Z-Y
Z-Y=X

I'm not sure how else it could be explained, but this is one way.

hmmm i have seen this before, but unfortunitly the only one i can remember at this time is that 1+1 = 1

a = 1
b = 1

a = b

a2 = b2 if a=b then the squars are exual

a2 - b2 = 0 move bsquared to other side of equation.

(a-b)(a+b) = 0 this is the algebric form of the previous equation

(a-b)(a+b)/(a-b) = 0/(a-b) what you do to one side you do to other.

1(a+b) = 0 anything divided by itself is 1 (a-b)/(a-b) becomes 1

(a+b) = 0 1 times anything is itself

1 + 1 = 0 a=1 b=1 already stated.

2 = 0 1 + 1 does equal 2....

Divide both sides by 2

1 = 0

Now we simply add 1 to both sides of the equation. (what you do to one side you must do to the other.

1 + 1 = 1

There is an explanation of this at a website..i think its DrMaths or something.

So I guess you could say 1+1 doesnt equal 3, it equals 1...lol

OK I SOLVED IT...WHY I DIDNT SEE IT BEFORE....HERE IS YOUR ANSWER THAT MAKES 1 + 1 = 3

Lets look at my last equation first

a = 1
b = 1

therefore...
a = b

a2 = b2 if a=b then the squars are equal (a2 means a squared)

a2 - b2 = 0 move b squared to other side of equation.

(a-b)(a+b) = 0 this is the algebric form of the previous equation

what you do to one side you do to other. (divide both sides by (a-b)

(a-b)(a+b)/(a-b) = 0/(a-b)

1(a+b) = 0 anything divided by itself is 1 (a-b)/(a-b) becomes 1

(a+b) = 0 1 times anything is itself

1 + 1 = 0 a=1 b=1 already stated.

2 = 0 1 + 1 does equal 2....

2 = 0 (divide by 2 on both sides)

1 = 0


(OK THIS IS WERE WE GOT TO LAST TIME...AND NOW TO SHOW YOU HOW 1 + 1 = 3)

WE ADD 2 TO BOTH SIDES

1 + 2 = 0 + 2
3 = 2 (of course 2 = 1 + 1) so....
3 = 1 + 1 or


1 + 1 = 3

I hate written math. It misses the whole point. I'll stick to visualizing my sacred geometry without any numbers involved except that I understand the golden ratio has something to do with it. THere we go. Stop limiting yourself with examples not pertaining to anything. They teach math backwards anyways for people like me. For years I thought I was a dumb ass in mathematics. What's the point? Blah! THe answer is in music, anyway!
