Easter Island Statues

I think there are like 4 or so scattered throughout the game and I am wondering what they do. Are they there for just eye-candy, or do they serve some secret purpose? I've never found it myself, but saw shots of it on websites and magazines.

I heard they do nothing... but it's suspicious because why would hideo put 4 in? maybe he just wanted us to all try for hours and shoot them and what not.
