I'm interested in knowing which names of FF characters are different from the original in other languages. And why do you think they often translate names? Isn't that stupid?

ENG : JAP
FF6:
Terra : Tina
Sabin : Mash
Cyan : Cayenne
Kefca : Cefca
Strago : Stragus
Stray (the Esper) : Cait Sith (!!)

FF9:
Freya : Freija (not absolutely sure about that one)

and then theres the Aerith / Aeris thing... though I think they're called Aeris in both anyway ??

As far as I know, Aerith is for japanese and Aeris for the otehr versions. You said, it, artist.

But I really had never thought about this or even had it in mind... it happens a lot in video games overall, Jolie. sometiems due to pronounciation or spelling factors, some otehr times just for comercialization... it may be a little stupid to change names some times, but I don't think this is a matter to care much about.

I agree with Frozen on the reasoning... the majority of the names the change are simply due to the lack of some sounds in either alphabet - like Kefka being spelt with "c"s beacuse there are no "k"s, or "Rydia" FF4 being "Lydia"

The only real exceptions I can see are Tina/Terra and Mash/Sabin... The first one is probably because it fits the character more (more mysterious) - perhaps Tina is a Magical name in Japan? (in Essex - where I come from - its considered a common "slapper" name ^_^).... as for Mash? perhaps they felt it didn't sound "mature" enough, or somthing...
