Eh? I thought Anata was "You" for females. Um...maybe I'm wrong....*feels stupid* But anyway, Reid, great thread, this is teaching me a lot! Arigatou gozaimasu! You're teaching the perfect amounts! BTW, BowevelJoe, I have this book called "Japanese Slang" that has all sorts of insults, slangs, and lingos that the Japanese use. But, this book is kinda outdated, so they might not be used anymore or it might be cheesy to use. :p |

As of what Meryl said, I also thought that anata was a way of saying "You" i don't know if it's directed for girls or not, but that was what I thought.

Well, here's a quick run down of personal pronouns.
Watashi I Anata You Kare He Kanojo She Watashitachi We Anatagata (Anatatachi) * You (plural) Karera (Karetachi) * They [ masc. , he and other(s) ] Kanojotachi They [ fem. , she and other(s) ] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'll post a bit more later tonight (just got home). I just wanted to put those up because of the gender confusion with anata from previous lessons. |

Oh, don't forget Boku which I believe is "I'm" or "I am" for males.
Now, I have a major request for help. I hope Reid or someone can help me out! My sister recently bought a Japanese Dessert Recipe Book, and she wants to make a Chocolate Heart Shaped Cake. Unfortunately, she doesn't read Japanese, but she wants me to help her translate the recipe, because I know a little, and have all sorts of dictionaries and books, and stuff. But, it's HARD!! There are sentences I don't understand and, the Japanese have a different measuring unit. Anyway, here are the sentences I need some help on: Shokuriimu I think it might be "Sho" in the beginning, because the Kanji dictionary had different meanings for this character. Okashi tsukurio hajimeru mae ni junbi I think it means something like, "Directions to prepare ahead for the structure of the cake"? Omigod, I don't know! BTW, BowevelJoe, here's two words: Shimatta means "Damn" Kuzo means "S***" |

Kuriimu means cream.
Okashi tsukurio hajimeru mae ni junbi means; Order of food preparation for the cake's structure., as far as I can tell. That might not be the exact meaning, but it's the best I could do. Also, when you see a word like kuriimu, usually you can just say it out loud, and hear that that it sounds almost exactly like the English word, cream, and tell by that. |

Sorry, I took way too long to get back to this, but here's another lesson.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Japanese questions are formed by adding a particle to the end of the sentence (many different particles are used to show word relation in Japanese). The question particle is ka, and is placed at the end of a sentence. Word order of the sentences does not change, ka is simply tacked onto the end of the sentence to make it insto a question. Ex. Yamada san wa gakusei desu ka. Is Mr. Yamada a student? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The negation suffix, -masen can be used with ka to make negative questions, invitations, or suggestions. Ex. Ikimasen ka. Don't (won't) you? Why don't you (we) go? Tookyoo e kaerimasen ka. Don't (won't) you go back to Tokyo? Why don't you (we) go back to Tokyo? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *Note* When writing in romaji (Japanese using the alphabet) a question mark isn't necessary to place after ka, because ka makes it a question without having to need that. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's all for now. :p |

Hey Reid? Where Are you getting all of your info from. Just curious. A lot of it looks very familiar from a book I have. It's called "teach yourself Japanese." It's not a very discriptive title, there's probally a whole bunch of books titled that. But, I had to ask.

I have a textbook called, Japanese All The Way which is published by Living Language, that I'm basing the lesson structure around.
The book has large units with a lot of information in each one that's grouped into smaller units. I take the topic of the unit (or two) then write it myself (making sure my terminology and Japanese spelling is right), adding some extra conversational stuff not in the book at the end (except today, because I didn't have time). I think the book is out of print, but it's really good. Also, almost all Japanese language textbooks will follow the same lesson order, because learning languages from the ground up usually needs to be done in a somewhat distinct order. The material might be spaced out differently but all of the lessons at the beginning of a book will be similar to ones from other books . . . (If i'm making sense anymore . . . :p ) |
