Funny, I recently rented all the Batman films just to review them and I would have to say that I like the first and second, hated the third, and felt pretty "eh" with the fourth. The "Dark Knight" was quite enjoyable btw. Ledger's Joker was rooted from Nicholson's version but Ledger's version was entirely his own. I like both versions equally. The film overall was enjoyable to watch too.

I completely agree, neither Joker is superior to the other, but Ledger's was unique and genius enough that it is also a completely valid portrayal that will go down in film making history as a classic. Some of his scenes just plain stole the show. Absolutely brilliant acting without any rules.
