This is kinda an off-topic post, so I apologize. I also apologize in advance because I may come off as offensive for what I'm about to say and if someone gets offended or angered by my post, PM me.

I think it's kinda strange. Many people I hear say they are so individualistic that they do not fit "into a group." Meaning as in, their ideals and whatnot are so different from the rest of the world that they do not "fit in" anywhere or with anybody. Yet, when they list off their music, it ends up they *do* find a place to belong...because a lot of people listen to the same bands they do. So...what I'm saying is...it's very strange to hear people say "I don't belong anywhere" or "I'm a misfit" when they actually do, because the certain group of people who listens to the same music as you will actually be "your group" meaning your "type of people." If this doesn't make sense, it's okay, I just wanted to point this out only because...

...my God...I truly don't fit in with the rest of you guys in terms of music. I feel so damn old...

You are younger than I am Meryl A sizeable amount younger, in fact, if I remember correctly. Don't worry about it. Be proud that you are one of the very few here who can actually say they listen to VERY different types of music. In fact, I find that very fascinating about you. That Visual Kei stuff you played for me that time was very, very cool stuff. It's kind of funny, actually. While we have certain goth rock bands over here dressing feminine but in a very dark sad and twisted way, meanwhile over in japan, they have the exact opposite and the music sounds the exact opposite, too. I love that idea. HAHA. It's like that magazine fruits I saw once.

Anyways, I'm a sucker for what I was inspired by the most when I was younger musically and any "true to the artform" derivatives of it. Anybody, playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas right now? Thought so. Let's just say the radio station in that game Audio X is more than just nostalgia for me. It uncannily represents the VERY favorite type of bands from the VERY time I tend to think rock music was at its best.

There are certain songs that never stop being one of my favorite tunes and 3 of them are
Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage"
Alice In Chains' "Them Bones"
and
JAne's Addiction's "Been Caught Stealing"

All of which are on that station.

OKies, since I would probably find it hard to mention some of my fav bands from other than that era right now since my mind is tired let's go 90's (more or less) here for a while:

Soundgarden
Pearl Jam
Smashing Pumpkins
Stone Temple Pilots
Mudhoney
NIrvana
Deftones (first heard em in '96)
Rage Against The Machine
TooL
Temple of the Dog
Mad Season
Alice In CHains
Foo Figthers (think first album...DAVE GROHL ROCKS)
Jane's Addiction
Red Hot Chili Peppers
White Zombie
Nine Inch Nails

A lot of people like a lot of these bands, though. So in a way, they are not the bands I like that are the ones that make me unique, but perhaps the way they make me feel and the reason I like them are. THere's other bands in between there styles that I used to dig during the time, but these ones are the landmarks to me. I hope I didn't leave any out. There are other bands from the time I feel more now than I used to because I did some digging into their material and realized the nostalgiaic effect they have on me, but the bands I listed above do way more than that. Maybe, a large part of me will forever be stuck in the nineties. This is what happens to most people. They pick a favoritate decade and they bring it with them.

IN my next post I will get into some of my intense world of metal bands. All I can leave you all with for now is an oxymoron. THANK GOD FOR BLACK METAL!!! BRU JA JA JA JA JA JAAAAAAAAAAAA

Oh man, then I'm going to have to get into rap. I got some important lists ahead.

True, I do listen to J-music now...but...*bursts out laughing* oh man, if only you knew what I *really* listen to, in terms of American music, then you wouldn't say that I was so "young." I absolutely refuse to list it off because I am way too embarrassed to do so even though people would not be surprised given my nature.

However, I will list off the J-bands I like:

Glay
The Yellow Monkey
Psycho le Cemu
Lareine
Gackt
Sophia
Judy and Mary
Penicillin

I don't find much sense in what you are saying here Meryl. Basically, this means that all people loving the same movie directors, the same videogames, the same painters would automatically make a group. So for example, just because I like some of the Nineties stuff Red likes, I'd have to feel like him, while we couldn't be more different. This doesn't make sense at all to me. In my opinion, art, even commercial art, has the extraordinary and impossible to define power to fascinate each according to his/her own internal resonances. The same song, the same band, can communicate different feelings, emotions, and ideas according to the listener. This happens also because we put ourselvels in everything we love, and because when you create art, you can be sure that 99% of those who will love what you are doing are misunderstanding you.

Many artists are conscious of this, others aren't. I remember Neil Young used to say he wanted his listeners to find their own individual path through all of his records - that's an idea I've always respected, and that's why I personally don't like prosaic songwriters and ready-made rock and pop stars (American, European, Japanese) that seem to act like gods talking to an audience of believers.

*points at above post*

I agree with that. We often talked about it.

I can only add to what he said, which is more or less what I could have said on the topic, that if you listen to, or like, the same bands of another, this could mean you maybe have similar opinions on certain matters, or let's say points in common, something you can share with somebody else. Not that is 100% true either. But could be. This is far from being part of an "ideal group" though, and very very different from "belonging to something": in fact I don't think a serious or careful or intelligent listener (or player, or reader, or whatever) will ever be able to say he belongs to something just because he has a great passion or interest for a band (or a game, or a book, or whatever). To be more precise I don't think a clever listener will ever be able to identify himself with what he listens to, so if this makes any sense, I doubt he will say he belongs to a type of people because of that. But... I'm making a little difference between people who really know what they choose, in terms of art or even entertainment or any other field, and the average person, who will probably fit a little better your description just because... saing he doesn't belong is an "attitude" more than a sincere feeling, and in many cases this average person will like or listen to whatever without any interest or ability to tell the real difference between things that "sound" similar but are in fact opposite in spirit (here come to my mind all the cases of people who say to like grunge bands and put Nirvana or Soundgarden in the same group of Stone Temple Pilots etc, which were created for commercial purposes only and to me looked more like the alternative equivalents of boy bands... This means, sorry I don't want to offend anybody, it's just personal opinion, people can be fooled by the sound or look of something pretty easily and they don't even notice).

PS: To end the post with a silly note, I rarely have any sympathetic feeling towards people who claim to like my same bands, with few exceptions. My lack of sympathetic feeling becomes open hostility when the person who claims to like my same bands puts among his preferences also the most ignoble stuff. I rarely have anything in common with them, apart from the fact we say we like the same bands, and I often feel irritated by their interpretation on the subject, which means I'm probably arrogant (sorry but... how could I say I belong to a group of people including me and people who listens to Smashing Pumpkins and T.A.T.U. or No Doubt at the same time? Sorry but... no way!)

Ok, I tried to keep this on a light level... I didn't want to start a post following Harry's one, but I had so many things to say on the subject ... maybe later... I'm too tired now, I can't even see what I'm typing

PPS: Oh and..meryl isn't Gackt a solo musician now? Didn't know he's still labeled as "band" after he left the last bands he was part of. Just curious to know.

For the group and misfit thinking subject, I think the great Ian mcKay of the even greater Minor Threat said it best when he stated: You think you're stepping out, but you're stepping in line.

To Harry and Panuru: Sorry, I knew what I said may have not made sense and maybe I should've clarified a bit more. The people I was referring to were those people who I've seen at my school who would say things like "I don't really fit into a group/am so individualistic (here meaning, goths, popular people, etc.) because I am neither one of those type of people." Yet, whenever they list off music or find one similar interest in with each other, they end up actually "belonging" to those type of people because, in the end, they do have the same interests, opinions, and/or ideals. It's almost like because they didn't know which group they fit into, they thought they were very unique, but in the end, they do find similar interests with other people because they do listen to the same types of music/interests with other people. Err...I hope this made sense somehow. Of course, I'm not saying everyone is like this, but from what I've seen (which happens often), it just gives me this impression.

As I said, I apologize for offending anyone, but it's just what I seen.

Panuru: Yeah, Gackt has gone solo, I just felt lazy to list off "artists/bands."
