it has a .zip extension so you need Winzip (or another compression program, like WinRar or WinAce) -> download the evaluation version here: https://www.winzip.com/

(Winzip is very widely used, so you probably ain't wasting time downloading it.)

|

[] means directory name

(The MPU401 driver does not support Plug & Play.)

How to Install the Roland Serial or MPU-401 MIDI Drivers
----------------------------------------------------------
(For Windows 3.1)
NOTE: If you are upgrading from an older version of a serial driver,
you should first delete the former driver before carrying out the procedure
described below. This may cause a message such as "COMx cannot be used"
to appear, but simply ignore the message and continue
with the installation.

1. Open the Control Panel and double-click on the Drivers icon.

2. Choose "Add" and select "Unlisted or Updated Driver".

3. Insert the driver disk into the floppy-disk drive and choose the
directory "A:\mpu&ser\win31".

4. In the "Unlisted or Updated Drivers" dialog box, select "Roland Serial
MIDI Driver" or " Roland MPU401 MIDI Driver."

5. In the Setup dialog box (see below), make the appropriate settings for
your computer, then restart Windows 3.1.

* Before attempting playback with an application such as the Media Player,
first select the "MIDI Mapper" icon under Control Panel and create a new map.

(For Windows 95)
If installing the MPU-401 driver, start from the following procedure 7. The MPU401
driver for Windows3.1 can be used under Windows95.

Before installing the serial MIDI driver, you should remove (unistall) the serial MIDI
driver for Windows 3.1 from your sysytem with the uninstaller located under the uninst
directory. Please refer UNINSTAL.TXT first.

1. Start up Windows 95.

2. Insert the driver disk in the floppy disk drive.

3. Click the [Start] button, and then click [Run]. The [Run] dialog box will be displayed.

4. In the [Open] text box, enter "A:\mpu&ser\uninst\uninstal.exe"
(if you are using drive B, enter "B:\mpu&ser\uninst\uninstal.exe" instead).

5. Click [OK].
The uninstaller starts up.

6. Follow the instructions on the screen.
If you see the message to restart the computer, remove the driver disk from the floppy disk
drive, then click [OK].
The computer starts up.

Now, it is ready for installing the driver.

7. Open the Control Panel and double-click "Add New Hardware".

8. Select "No" in response to "Do you want Windows to search for your new hardware?",
then click "Next".

9. Select "Sound, video and game controllers", then click "Next".

10. Click the "Have Disk..." button, then insert the driver disk into
the floppy-disk drive and choose the directory "a:\mpu&ser\win95".
( If installing the MPU401 driver, then choose the directory "a:\mpu&ser\win31".)

11. In the "Select Device" dialog box, select "Roland Serial MIDI Driver for Windows 95"
or "Roland MPU401 MIDI Driver".

12. In the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog box, click "Finish".

13. In the Setup dialog box (see below), make the appropriate settings
for your computer, then restart Windows 95.

* Before attempting playback with an application such as the Media Player,
first go into the Control Panel and select "Multimedia," select the "MIDI"
tab, and select the serial or MPU401 driver for "Single instrument".

Now the problem im having is that, well for one, I dont have a driver disc and it says you need one for installtion. Second,. in my control panel there is no icon called drivers or even one that seems to install new drivers. You've allready been a big help artist, you dont need to waist your time on this but any more advice would be appreciated, THANKS

I'll try my best to direct you in the way I usually do this kind of thing, but beware that i'm using Win98, so it may differ slightly from what you actually have to do (if you are using 2000 or XP, say so and i'll see if I can find out how that works - I know 2000 does things differently)

---

Firstly, Unzip the driver files to somewhere handy on your pc (perhaps, " C:\Drivers\SFXCard " might be a good idea?) - also make sure that you have "use folder names" ticked. It'll make it easier.

Next, Right click on your "my computer" icon on the desktop, select "Properties". Next, select the "Device Manager" Tab. This should give you a list of components on your PC ("CDROM, Disk Drives, Display Adapters etc."), all branching from "Computer" at the top. First thing to be looking for is anything with a yellow question mark which says "Unknown Device". If you've got one, chances are that'll be your Sound Card (provided its the only thing you haven't not installed ^_^). If your PC has some idea about what it is, it may have placed it under "Sound, video and game controllers".

Anyways, right click on the "unknown device" or anything that looks exactly like your Sound Card, and click Properties. From Here, click the "Driver" Tab, and then the "Update Driver" Button.

Click "Next>" twice, and under "Specify a location" hit "Browse". Then Browse to whatever folder you put the drivers in, then click on the "WIN95" folder (on my PC this would have come out as " C:\Drivers\SFXCard\MPU&SER\WIN95 "). Click all the "Oks" and "Nexts" that your PC throws at you, and hopefully you should be done.

Hopefully.

Thanks for that, im pretty sure if i can get the right driver installed that will work. But as you can see in the installation steps it lists in the read me i posted, you need to go through all those steps with the disc to install it first. When I go to my device list the only thing with the question mark is the icon for the speakers. I dont know, I really do appreciate all the help, ill just keep trying to download and install the right drivers. BIG TIME THANKS FOR ALL THAT ARTIST, YOU RULE ~!
