Reid, i believe you are correct with the characters misato, and ritsuko, but the children are from WWII battle ship names. It was simply a coincidence that three of the evangelion creation team were named shinji.

Yes, CC is right about the names...
Characters were named after warships, and shipping terms/items, most of which were Japanese warships. Asuka was partially named after a U$ naval ship, however. This mostly applies to the surnames, though.

As far as I know, it goes like this :

Akagi -- Akagi Class Aircraft Carrier

Aoba -- Heavy Cruiser

Ayanami -- Fubuki Class Destroyer

Fuyutsuki -- Akizuki Class Destroyer

Hyuga -- Battleship

Ibuki -- Aircraft Carrier

Katsuragi -- Unryu Class Aircraft Carrier

Soryu -- Soryu Class Aircraft Carrier

In addition, the following names are based on nautical terms [whatever in hell that actually means ] :

Ikari -- Anchor

Kaji -- Rudder

Rokubungi -- Sextant

Keel -- The major piece of timber that forms the hull of a ship

Asuka's American surname is also named after a ship, from the US Navy:

Langley -- Aircraft Carrier (named after an aircraft pioneer, c. 1900

On a side note [kinda], I think Shinji's name was somewhat of a pun, since Shinji can mean "to trust or to believe", and Ikari at the same time can also mean "anger". So therefore, Ikari Shinji --> trusting in anger [according to my head >.>].

Sounds like him kinda, no ?

Also, Rei [if I'm not mistaken] is a homonymn for "zero", which both indicates her Unit number and her personality.
