God yes, the world will be a far better place without Berlusconi in power. Here's hoping.
I'm thinking about why my ear is hurting. Trapped water and possible infection, arrgh! And in the week the band has three shows as well. I'm also in a panic about writing the remaining 8000 words of my dissertation. I wish I had the motivation to just sit here for hours and type but instead I keep getting distracted and now my ear is all messed up it's just another excuse not to write.

Hope your ear will get better soon!
Tomorrow is the second voting day here. Then we get the results. I feel so worried... Umberto Eco said if Berlusconi wins again, he's going to leave the country. I'd gladly do the same

What's this new alliance of some sort he has with that stupid mussolini-woman?? Is he that desperate? I thought he controlled all media like any good old dictator so he is gonna win the elections easy, but he looks kinda worried in his actions so maybe we'll all get lucky...

Seems Prodi's coalition got the Chamber of Deputies but Berlusconi got the Senate. Which is no good at all!
I was hoping for better results, but since as Berserker said Berlusconi had great mediatic impact, especially on ignorant masses, this isn't very surprising.Berlusconi is a person who shouldn't be allowed to speak in public. This implies he shouldn't be allowed to rule a country as well. He said many interesting things in the last years. He said he's like Napoleon and Jesus Christ. He called Martin Schulz "kapo", he said Chinese boiled children under communism, he called those voting for the center-left coalition "pricks" in more than one occasion.... Just to mention a few of his most memorable moments... Other members of his coalition aren't any better. Alessandra Mussolini - yes, she's the granddaughter of Benito - said "better fascist than gay", Tremonti, a member of Berlusconi's cabinet said Netherlands is adopting Nazi-style eugenics laws under the banner of euthanasia. Minister Calderoli had T-shirts printed with those satirical cartoons that caused all the troubles with the Islam extremists. So you see... they're just a bunch of ignorants and arrogants. Letting the center-right rule the country for another five years would mean destroy the country itself. I'm glad Prodi's Union got the Chamber of Deputies, but just for a few votes. The center-right coalition is rejecting the present results and declared they will request to count every vote again. Reminds me a lot what happened with the Bush/Gore elections BTW, we are still waiting for for official results of the votes of Italians who are living abroad. But a split Parliament doesn't make much sense. It's like saying the other half of this country is rotten

I don't know how the italian system works exactly, but with Prodi winning the chamber it means left atleast got influence now right?? I mean, it's more than they had the last years?? Do laws need to be passed by the chamber in order to be official?

Laws need the approval of both chambers in order to be approved. So yes, they have more influence, but the situation is completely new and in theory it's impossible to lead the country with only the Chamber of Deputies but not the Senate. Somebody said that if this is how things are, we will need to vote again.

I'm really hoping that Berlusconi gets forced to concede defeat as the BBC is saying might happen. We really don't need any more corrupt neo-conservative governments in this world, because they are just tipping the scales and creating the very danger they claim to be protecting us from (i.e terrorism). I wept when Bush got re-elected. Thankfully, his second term has only marked him out to be a lost little child in the middle of the single most corrupt administration ever, but still. Lets hope that Mussolini mk2 gets kicked out somehow.

So Berlusconi got kicked out of both now? Congratz!
Can he still ask for a recount or is it out of the question due to the results?? I'm wondering how he will react to this, he doesn't seem like someone who can accept his defeat easily...

He's a man who control a lot of the media, so he's probably got all sorts of ploys lined up, but please please please let him go! For the sake of the world!

I heard on the radio yesterday, that there are a lot of concernes about Prodi's coalition also, cause it's a big coalition with a lot of different views(socialist, communist etc.) and they are affraid that making any decisions will be difficult due to inner conflicts. They stated that in order to be able to beat Berlusconi they had to make a rather unlikely coalition and this could avenge on them in the future.

This is true. In 1996 Prodi won the elections and becane Prime Minister. In 1998 the Communist Refoundation Party withdrew its support to his government and the goverment fell for one vote only. I hope this time they will avoid situations where the goverment is in constant danger of a crisis because of conflicts regarding critical points, like taxation, labour etc... The members of the Union approved a common program, they agreed on all its points. They must find a way to mantain the stability inside the coalition keeping this in mind. Which I admit is a lot easier in words.
Anyway... Prodi's bringing Italian troops away from Iraq, finally... Georgie W will feel a bit lonely now... And Berlusconi now is begging for a role in the new goverment. He asked to form a new bigger coalition, just to be included in it. The bastard... he has no pride ![]() Edit: and I forgot to say one thing, which is very funny and odd. A few minutes after Prodi's coalition announced their success yesterday, came the news that the most important living mafioso, Bernardo Provenzano, was caught after more than 40 years in the hiding. Somebody said it was not a coincidence, after all. Maybe it is, maybe it is not... and that's what makes it so strange... |

I heard they found some boxes on the street containing uncounted valid votes?? Is this true?? Maybe Silvio still has some tricks up his sleeves?

They are very confused themselves. They wanted a recount, now they don't seem to want it anymore. At least, some of them denied they ever wanted to count the votes again, and said the only one who was making all this fuss about this question was Berlusconi. They're abandoning him, because he doesn't want to become opposition, he still wants and still thinks to have his place in the next legislature. In case he obtains some interesting result or can prove anything, they'll be considering him an ally again. It's becoming a soap-opera...

The BBC says now that even if every single disputed Ballot went to the right, then he'd still not get the swing needed to stay in power. He should just hurry up and concede!
