The Draft
I've noticed that at work more people are talking about the US re-enacting the draft do you think it will happen or no? One guy i talked to said that we need to realize it only takes one stroke of a pen to change it all.
Im not worried tho im already enlisted

I highly doubt that even Bush would do something that dumb. Look what happened last time that there was a draft (that would be Vietnam).
Sending untrained citizens out there is stupid. We have the manpower, weapons, and whatever else needed to make our military the strongest out there.

I think the US is already in another Vietnam situation and the mess that is Iraq is far too deep for such morans as Bush and Powell to deal with. Hopefully we'll see the Bush administration pulled down under the weight of its own ineptness this November, and Kerry will get a chance to redeem the countries foreign policy.
In short, it's not going to happen. It would be throwing people into a meatgrinder.

Nobody in this world is trained for those conditions. Essentially any U.S forces out there are being forced to fight a Guerilla war without any clear way they can go on an offensive to tackled insurgency. It really is a clear example of why we just should not under any circumstances be in Iraq.

Then i pose this question would you rather see saddam taken down in your generation or your kids because either way he would have been what has happened in the past has happened and i dont agree with it but i am happy its happening in my generation and not in my kids.

I'm happy he's out of power but believe he should have been out of power in 1991 during the first Gulf War as we were at war with him then. I saw now reason to force a Regime change upon a country that was already crippled by UN Sanctions. They posed no threat whatsoever to any surrounding country at the time of the war and largely did not harbour any terrorists and had no link to Al Queda. Sadly it's a lot easier for Terrorists to find a base and sympathy within a country with the sheer level of inner turmoil that is now occuring within Iraq.

I think a reinstated draft law would be ridiculous. When you talk about a "free" country, forced military service seems like a violation of a pretty important choice.
I can only imagine how horrifying it would be to get drafted now or during the Vietnam War. Especially when an individual disagrees with the circumstances of a war, it would be such a violation to send them into it against their will. Let's hope it never gets put back into effect. |

The interesting thing is that games based on Vietnam are becoming more commenplace, I start to get an idea (and via stupid means, yes) of how horrible that conflict (and indeed any conflict) would have been to serve in.

Ya i agree that i dont think it would be a free country if people didnt have the choice the only time i would see that it would be justified is if the USA its self was being attacked or invaided and it was a last effort to put up some resistance.

My mind is too tired for this subject. I'm just going to say thank god they turned down that bill.
And about Vietnam games coming out... I can't even imagine playing them. It was such a horrible war and the atrocities resulting on both sides... well, this is nothing new, but even a game like GTA is based mostly on fantasy and movies. Yes it's glorifying violence, but to me it seems almost innocent compared to simulating the Vietnam war and in anyway glorifying that. I admit that I enjoy playing many realistic FPS's, but these new games coming out make me stop and take a look at who we are and what we call entertainment. Developers certainly have the right to make these games and we certainly have the right to play them. I am merely expressing the discomfort in the amount of enjoyment one might find in doing so without feeling much guilt in helping to glorify such a thing. Of course, that raises other questions about other war games in the past, but I am just saying that this sort of opens my eyes more a little bit as to what we are emulating in order to entertain ourselves. Should we so arrogantly take something so lightly that we can only imagine understanding that soldiers in Vietnam actually had to go through? Hmmmm... just something I've been thinking about. Not like I'm for censorship or anything PEACE everyone _RED_ stuff
