Collectors

Do you collect or have you ever collected anything? Would you spend lots of money for a piece of your collection, if for example this item is rare? What do you think of collectors in general? Do you think they're weird losers or that following their passion they do the right thing?

I have nothing against collectors, but I'm annoyed when they become maniacal about it. You can't talk with them about anything that doesn't revolve around their hobby. I haven't collected anything seriously myself, because I'm not that constant to only like one or few things and start caring about them exclusively.

I sometimes start collections, but get bored after very little time Collecting stuff isn't very appealing to me. I don't like the obsessive attitude of collectors for the reason you mentioned: they are completely absorbed by their hobby and sometimes become alienated and lose contact with reality (months ago it happened that I read a letter of girl who was worried of war against Iraq simply because she was afraid she wouldn't be able to get dolls by airmail anymore! She was serious, at the beginning I thought it was a stupid joke! I mean, are you idiot or what? ). You can have passions and hobbies, and collecting stuff can be one of them, but being brainwashed by it is something I can't accept!

i collected comics when i was like 12/13. Sorta got tired of keeping up with them all though. That and they really start to put a dent in the pocket.

I'm a big collector on merchandise and yes, I admit, I would probably spend the money to get a rare item...but only if I had it. Otherwise, if it's too expensive or not worth it, I let it go. Thankfully I'm not one of those people whom you guys talk about; the ones who alienate themselves from the world or become obssessed with their hobby. Even though I collect myself, I find those people pretty annoying.

I used to collect stamps and gems wen I was a kid. This is the ultimate nerdish activity, you don't have to tell me! After some time I got bored of collecting and lost all interest in these things. At the moment I don't collect anything, and even if I had all the necessary time and money, I don't think I could start new collections. I like to buy some item I find cool now and then, but it's not part of any collection. I wouldn't despise collecting dolls for example, but I wouldn't like to make of this hobby my obsession. I don't see what's wrong with people who hate collectors. Anybody has his manias: one is obsessed by the fact of collecting stuff, another by dieting, another one by sports and so on. If this becomes your only purpose in life, that's more like a serious problem than a reason to hate these people.

I collected Stamps when my Parents encouraged it... and stopped soon afterwards. In my later Primary School Years, I also latched onto two of the big fads at that time - Pogs (remember those little discs with the orange hairy guy on?) and Football Stickers (the ultimate rip-off activity. You paid some god-damned stupid ammount for a photo of a footballer on a piece of crappy laminated paper, which you stuck into an album. I've never even really liked Football!). Any "recognised" collecting kind of stopped after then (I saw that It was all a bit silly really).

That is unless you're willing to count my Games and Book Collections (Particuarly my Terry Pratchett Paperback Collection - I have about 20 of his 35 or so books. Mostly because they look pretty ^_^)

I started some with Dragonball Z CCG cards, but video games are number one and there's been a lot them lately I'd like to get. If I had the money I probably would seriously start collecting something, but not like alienating myself from the world. It'd be more like something I feel I have actually kept almost they way it was when I bought it.

Yes yes, I agree with all of you: collecting is fun, especially collecting games/anime stuff! I also think collecting something you will actually use will prevent you from losing contact with reality, which happens instead for things that are made only to be collected and not used at all!

I am huge collector....... I collect things like crazy. But only if they intrest me. I am an Action Figure Collector. I collect fu\igures, to decorate my room with them.

I havn't got much stuff right now, but its growing.

I remember I had 25 action figures of Ninja Turtles. That was amazing, but my dad gave them to this little kid (his friend's son), and his mom thought it was garbage and she threw it in the dump. I cried that day alot, I remember!!!.!!! and I think thats why I have this urge to collect action figures now. And I do get a feeling that I will start re collecting Ninja Turtle figures again.

I will spend quite some amount of money, but there is always a limit. BUT>>>>> when it comes to Metal Gear Solid, I have no limit. No matter what it goes for....I will buy it. I remember, I bought Metal Gear Solid Limited Addition boxset for $200. But it was worth it. I love it. And I am still searching for Metal Gear Solid 2 boxset........... "Meryl actually has that one" but I am happy for her.

And I think I collect Video Game Posters............. as many of you may have seen my room. Its filled with it, and still I buy them and try to find a space on the wall.

And yeah, anything related to EMINEM........I have to buy it......... HAVE TO. That guy is amazing!.!

I collect knowledge and weird imagined worlds of reality inside my head. I also collect music. I collect videogames and if I could I would get every single one I wanted ever made and what comes out each month, but that's insane because it costs an arm and a leg and I just don't have the funds to buy games at the rate that I used to. It's eating me away inside, though, knowing that there are so many games out there that I do not have and will never get to play, even though I know I wouldn't get to most of them anyway if i actually owned all of them. I am the same way with books, especially anything by H.P. Lovecraft or related, Neil Gaiman, and anything depressing and/or imaginative. It sounds like I must have a lot of these types of things collected, but I actually don't compared to real collectors because I don't have that kind of money, but if I did i probably would have no shame. I'd collect everything under the sun that's ever interested me throughout my life. I want to collect strange old books on spirituality and the occult. I want to collect used cars. I want to collect brand new sports cars. And most important of all, I must have a large collection of guitars.

As you can see, I have the kind of obsessive personality that would drive other people insane when it comes to this sort of thing. I would use the money if I had it to help people out before I would ever be able to spend THAT much on myself, though. It would certainly bother me collecting all this stuff people could have a use for when I don't need it all or the money could be put towards something they need.

Actually, right now I am in need of enough money for living expenses myself, to say the least and I feel so gluttonous talking about all those things I would like to collect when I know there are things much more important at hand.

But I suppose if your collecting of something has to do with a passion of yours that is related to achieving your life goals, then it is necassary.

Anywayz, as for now...I'm just collecting dust

When I was a little kid I used to collect those garbage pail kids-cards( anyone remember those???), they were THE biggest hit amongst children in the eighties I had about 350 cards it was sick
https://www.poundart.com/gpk/cards/067lisa.jpg

As of lately I mainly collect music: cd's, 7" and 12" 's.
I have about 700 cd's and like 180 vinyls. It got kinda out of hand and I'm in desperate need of some room in my room(???).

I once tried collecting guitars, but they're to damn expensive so I never got past two

I think some collectors are a bit sad, the ones who collect dolls and are about 50! especially if they play with them! and are men!

But I mean I used to collect keyrings and now I collect owls (statues, keyrings ect) coz they are my fave animal, so my family buy me owl stuff, I dont intentionally collect anything really just happens that I obtain alot of the same stuff! lol I dont have mass collections of anything coz I get bored after a while.

Altho when I go Collectormania conventions I only go to meet the celebs not to buy anything and when I see the full grown men running around with hats and jackets full of badges and bags of dolls ect I feel better about myself, that I have a life! ;D

No offence to anyone who does minor collecting they r ok! but ppl that collect as their life thats a tiny bit sad!

Just my opinion!

Well, I suppose they don't exactly "play" with the dolls... They just keep them in a safe place, change clothing/make-up and take shots of them? It's a bit like collecting other stuff (action figures etc...), but more "interactive" o__O;
BTW, men are meticulous dolls collectors, from what I know, but the thought of a man living alone and collecting dolls is a bit scary...

Some dolls are beautiful, but very expensive! No wonder only men without family can afford to spend billions for dolls and accessories! Probably many people as Piggle_humsy may think this is a sad thing...

Wow, I bet most of those cost a lot of money. Video games are and always will be my first priority as far as hobbies, though getting a sword would be nice.

Yes, but you have the Limited Metal Gear Solid boxset which is the one thing I really, really want badly. So, I guess we're even.

I think it's those type who have their hobby/obsession consume them which is why a majority dislike these type of collectors. Like for example, I was channel-surfing and I came across this show on MTV called "True Life" (or something) and they were talking about embarassing parents. This one kid's dad is so obsessed with Star Wars that he actually believes he's a part of the whole thing. He collects Star Wars stuff like crazy and that's all he talks about. He even started crying when he was talking about the moment when he first saw Star Wars when he was a kid. Now, to me...that's kinda annoying and scary at the same time.
