Wow. I've never had one, but I guess if all the people are there for the same reason and you enjoy they'd be fun. I understand if you do it with video game systems or laptops, but why a PC tower and monitor?

I feel like a total idiot asking this, but can't you only do it with computers? I didn't think you could do it with consoles. How do you hook them up?

i've been to a small (30 people) LAN on about 3 occasions... there were competitions, but it became factionised into "file sharers" and "gamers" before I stopped going. I personally like to get a few mp3s or whatever on my PC, but its the games i'm most into. I mostly sucked at CS, but I got to the final in the 2 vs 2 Q3 CTF tourney... so wahey!

(also, the upper sixth formers once set up the School network for An Unreal, Tournament - clever wording ^_^ - I beat everyone in my year (year 9 at the time) and came second overall. hurrah or somthing.)

I did one at my place on July 26nd, and the second one took place yesterday...... AUGUST 6th. And man it was FREAKING AMAZING!.! Even more people were there........wow.

I did take some pics and as soon as I get my hand on them......I'll post them right away.

We had tons of HALO matches.........man..it was amazing. We called it .... (Game "2" Nirvana). Because it was the 2nd one taking place. These are the games we played........ not all were System Link types.

1.) Halo
2.) Unreal Championship
3.) Moto 2
4.) Brute Force
5.) Fuzion Frenzy
6.) Mario Party 4
7.) Winning Eleven
8.) NHL 2k3
9.) Mechassault
10.) RTCWolfenstien

There were 12 people this time........ some girls were totally rookie......but still they did quite a good defending.........when played Capture the Flag games. Oh and also played Tony Hawk...

THIS event was such a SUCCESS........... the 3rd one is on its way.

They sound like they'd be fun. My friends brother held one once... I wasn't invited though... well, his brother frightens me so I'm glad I wasn't invited.

I would go to LAN parties but my computer is f'n HUGE! It's about the size of a suitcase. I'm not talking about those breifcases businessmen carry, I'm taking one of those "we only got one suitcase and we aint coming back so pack all your stuff in here" suitcases. When I ordered this case I didnt know it was gonna be so damn big. Soon I'm gonna buy one of those small mini-ITX cases and motherboard so I can carry around my computer with ease.

Please excuse my ignorance, but could anyone DEFINE what a LAN party is? specifically I'm in doubt, do they take event on a particular place, or over the internet? Or even both?

I'm kind of confused

About three years ago I remember I brought my PSX to a guy's house, where someone else had also brought another PSX and so we used them on 2 TV's and held Gran Turismo 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Syphon Filter 2 Tournaments (and some other sports games)

Now, here comes the millenium question: Was that a LAN party?

It was as much of a LAN party as the XBox examples that people posted. Yes, as an irritating purists, I don't think thats a LAN party at all (if you call a console linkup a LAN Party, you can also call 4 kids with linked GBAs a LAN party, which doesn't sound right to me.)

nah, anyway: the most important part of the L.A.N. acronym is "Local" - The internet doesn't qualify, because its far too big, but local tends to mean on the scale of a room or a buliding - some communities have all their computers networked though...

oh and a true "LAN Party" really needs about 16 machines and people. Some are organised reguarly, and vary from about 16 to around 400 people. (I believe the ID sponsered "Quake-Con" is one such large event?)

Its a giant orgy.

Only kidding, my defenition would be having alot of people from 50-100 all meeting up in a townhall/ college etc briging consoles ans PC's depends what games, and hook them all up, sytem link and LAN internet, but you all play each other who's there.

You could have 16 peeps around your house for halo, and you call that a LAN party (all playing).
