In each realm, one of the levels has a secret door looking thing. Once you step on it, you'll be transported to a secret level. You have a limited amount of time to grab the coins. If you do get the coins, you get a secret character. No matter if you complete it or not, you'll be taken back you'll be taken back and can finish the level.

To play as them, go to the manage character screen and change to a secret character. After you change, the new form you select will start from the beginning of the game. Technically, you can play though the game 16 times without having to start over.
