The initial non-updated release of XP is quite flawed, I too experienced a tonne of problems. Now I use Windows Update once a week to make sure XP is as up to date as possible. That may solve a lot of your problems.

thats probably the best start you can make, and Windows Update will keep Media player up to date as well (btw, I was under the impression that Windows Update tells you when there are critical updates to download anyway, as has been the case in the few times i've actually needed to use it for Win2000. though after 4 service packs, you'd have hoped they'd get it right by now). Make sure you have the latest version of iMesh as well.
Also, I refer you to Spank's advice about firewalls and stuff, if you've not already gone down that path. Consider it "tried and tested" as my PC is probably on it's longest period without "needing" to be formatted for quite some time (... thats usually about 3 months though) : https://forums.psfantasy.com/showthr...&threadid=6897
