you can know the basics of the backstory without playing the game and Certainly without reading the books (Thats just cheating!). You've filled in a few gaps in my knowledge there, but my original point stands.

Its all a bit cliche really. "Genetically Enhanced". Who isn't these days? (Warren Spector owns the T-Shirt) Trained for war since he was 6: Heard that one too. The overall impression I've got is that he's just fortunate to have plenty of backstory. That Gordon isn't a DNA boosted war bred soldier is what makes him interesting. He's different, but he owes his abilites to no one else. Cept the HEV suit... but MC cheats there as well right?

As for how I can compare the two characters, who knows. I kind of thought that was the question asked?
