Sasuke has definitely not been the main character throughout. The series has always portrayed Naruto as the type that doesn't like to lose, and Sasuke's "I rock" character is only to give Naruto motivation. Think about it... Who beat Haku? Naruto. Who outsmarted Zabuza? Naruto. When they were training on the tree for chakra transfer, Naruto started out only doing a few steps, while Sasuke was able to go half way, but by the end of the day, Naruto had caught up to Sasuke.

And yes, Kakashi is the best character in the series, hands down.

Spoiler: show Later in the series, as I follow the manga, page by page, they come across a character "Neji" from another village, who is supposedly stronger than Sasuke, and in the tournament, Naruto defeats him. Another character, Gaara, Sasuke also fails to defeat him, but Naruto defeats him. When Orochimaru appeared, Sasuke was scared, and Naruto actually saved him for once. And yes, Kakashi is the best character in the series, hands down. __________________
