nah. its no coincidence: Cid always has been related to airships, or at least high technology:

FF4: He built and Maintained an entire fleet, including one named "Enterprise". Notable also for hitting people with spanners.
FF5: When the Airship was found off the coast of an island, he and his Grandson (Mid) got it working and maintained it for your party. Once blew down the walls of a prison cell only to end up in the cell next to his own. oops.
FF6: Though not anything really to do with Airships (that duty went to the Gambler, Setzer), he was the main scientist and probably made some of the technology that lead to the flying Magi-tech armors. Likes Yummy Fish and not rancid smelly fish.
FF7: Pilot of the Highwind and Little bronco (...which was a plane...). Swears for the novelty of it. Also dreams of being an astronaut...
FF8: Though the game was essentially airship less, he was associated with the apple-turnover that took it's place for the first few discs. Once dressed up as an ageing Nanny so he could see his kids.
FF9: Again he was a genius who designed many of the world's best and fastest air-ships. They were all named "Hilde Garde #" in tribute to the wife he never saw because he spent too much time building airships . Also notable as the "Cid you can play as" that everyone forgets (probably because you're a frog trying to get a key at the time.)
FF10: Pilot of the airship which the al-bhed succesfully pulled from the bottom of the sea. Despite the high overall age of Cids, he appears to be the only one who is subject to the Male Pattern Baldness that intelligent types in computer games usually have.

I haven't played FF2 or FF3 though... I'm pretty certain he has somthing to do with them in 2... as for Tactics; as much as I love that game, it does play a little like it was supossed to be a Tactics Ogre game, but they just replaced a few sprites and names here and there... I mean, Cid isn't really "Cid": he's Cidolofas Orlandu. Just try and beat the game without him ^_^
