Many japanese Eva fans were really disappointed after the movies were released (both Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion). I dunno what they were expecting, but probably what Rei said is true: they were looking for explanations not contained in the original series and they found out the movies didn't give them what they were expecting. But I think the most appealing and interesting aspect of Evangelion is that you don't have an explanation for anything, you have to guess and think about it after watching the episodes many times. You don't have the chance to understand the meaning of Eva if you just care about details like "Who are the Angels and what do they want?" and such things. Eva is very metaphysical, that's the difference betewwen it and other mecha anime you can find around, but probably not anybody is aware of this fact.
