I've read the Chinese book Journey to the West and I can see they took some inspiration for the series (together with all the other series inspired by this popular Chinese story, which are very common) but frankly I couldn't find many resemblances between the anime and the book. The book is really funny, anyway, in case you're wondering.
The fact is I don't like much the characters of this anime (actually, my fave one is Cho Hakkai), and the villains in particular are pretty... hmmm... average? Some aspects of animation also bother me, like too much computer graphics.
