Just as a fair warning my entire post may be one big spoiler so read at your own risk. With the disclamer out of the way, here we go:

I dunno if anyone else answered this question (I didnt bother to read past your post
) but the reason he was able to control the sentinel was because of two things.
1) Either the "real world" is a second martix to trap people who broke out of the program or:
2) Neo realised that we can control machines since we made them. So stopping those sentinels was as easy as turning off any other machine.
I saw the movie on Friday and I loved it. My favorite part was when neo had that pipe and was fighting the agents. He sent them flying like baseballs. Me and my friends was laughing our butts off at that part. It was just too funny.
I also enjoyed the car chase with the ghosts. It was pretty cool how the ghosts just went in and out of the cars the way they did and when Morpheus fought the agent. But one pet peeve I had with morpheous fighting was when he jumped he never flew off the truck. If you jump as high as he did on something moving that fast, most likely you'll land on the road.
