That's right. This film was originally a book/novel and had 2 sequels. It was also turned into a Japanese TV series, but from that came the movie which was a huge success. So huge, that there are 3 more movie sequels and comic books as well (probably all in Japan; I just recently saw an ad for the other 2 books in a Japanese magazine). It was considered an "underground cult classic" among Japanese teens when it came out.
I haven't seen it yet.  I owe the rental store too much...avoiding them right now.
