Yeah, that's pretty annoying when people start arguments for deciding which is better. Cats are not cruel by nature, as dogs are not cruel by nature. Cruelty is something that man applies to other species, but it's not proper of them. Cats and dogs are all animals. They follow instincts and instincts are similar for each animal, telling them to feed themselves, to reproduce themselves, to protect their territories and to survive. For this reason, when a dog or a cat is in danger or in other particular situations, no matter what, it'll act like an animal. There won't be anymore "man's best friend" or other similar things. They'll hurt you if they must, because they'll try to protect themselves and their breed (if they have one). This is not cruelty, this is
nature. Better you learn this instead of dissing an animal's nature because you don't like it or because you don't know much about it.

That's the thing I hate about cats is that they are so independant and they think they are better than everyone.

Thinking they're better than anyone is not proper of a cat's mind either. The cat simply don't care, that's why it can't be trained as a dog. Cats like to be left alone when they want to stay alone. They're not as social as dogs, but they like company sometimes.

I think a HUGE part in this 'dogs or cats?' dealy has to do with upbringing too. I mean if you've had a dog all your life (as me) and then get a cat 20 years later, you expect the cat to be somewhat like the dog in the fact that they care about their owners and care not to hurt them or whatnot. I'm not saying that I expect all animals to be alike! By heavens no.

What you said it's true: people usually decide which is "better" thinking about the pets they used to own. I repeat: I had both (dogs for 9+ years and cats for 12+ years) and for different aspect they're all great pets. It's pretty unfair comparing them.
