I don't know the exact number of episodes, but yes, it is very long. There are 4 OVA's at the beginning that are compiled into two discs, each containing two OVA's (Samurai X: Trust, and Samurai X: Betrayal.) At the end there are the Seisou Hen OVA's that are the definite end to the series. There's one movie that doesn't follow the plot, and there are some important manga's. Also...watch Mobile Suit Gundam!!! It's especially great if you like sci-fi stuff, and it's the one that started all the Gundam's. It's great...good battles, amazing story...etc, etc.
