I agree with Frozen on the reasoning... the majority of the names the change are simply due to the lack of some sounds in either alphabet - like Kefka being spelt with "c"s beacuse there are no "k"s, or "Rydia" FF4 being "Lydia"

The only real exceptions I can see are Tina/Terra and Mash/Sabin... The first one is probably because it fits the character more (more mysterious) - perhaps Tina is a Magical name in Japan? (in Essex - where I come from - its considered a common "slapper" name ^_^).... as for Mash? perhaps they felt it didn't sound "mature" enough, or somthing...
