In my native country things change also a lot from one city to the other, but you usually understand with no problem what they mean. As for me, I could say that my spanish is neutral. No accent, just the language the way it is supposed to be spoken. Of course, that is excluding the slangs.
And yeah, englishmen are more likely to call you mate than fella or bud.
