I think it's a good idea in essence, but only when done right and for the right reasons. I haven't completed FFX yet, so I can't comment on whether Squaresoft can justify FFX : Another World : The Lord of Darkness (if thats what it is called ) , but the one picture supposedly from the game (the "Yuna Raider" one) makes me have second thoughts as to whether its a good idea...
*spoilers*
But for some games, I like the idea: Final Fantasy 7 has a kinda confusing ending... and its also a very very popular game. Final Fantasy IV has the original badass (Kain) who never really finishes his story (he's still jealous of Cecil, still scared of how he was contorlled etc.)... They would make good "Sequel" games, unlike FF5, FF8 and FF9, which were expertly rounded off (except perhaps the fact that Square never bothered to tell us that Laguna is Squall's dad, and all the "is Rinoa, Ultemecia" stuff... But hey, thats what fan-fiction is for right? )
Oh and apart from the offical ones, there are plenty of unoffical sequels around made by fans on RPG creators.... I'm quite looking foward to Final Fantasy VI : The Power Within, but then Relm's the main character ^_^
