Yeah, I'd choose Lain too, and One Piece, even if meryl told me the drawing style it's too weird for her :p
Someone mentioned Evangelion, but Evangelion is not exactly unknown: it's probably one of the most famous anime around.
I'd say Secret of Bluewater instead, which is also from Gainax (the same of Evangelion) but is not as much famous. It's one of my fave anime series ever.


About movies, I have tons of old Japanese movies I'd like to talk about, and not only Japanese. Only because they're not new, people seem not interested. Oh well, I think it's a matter of getting used to this kind of things...

About music, I don't know. There are lots of bands I like and others don't know or don't know well, but to me musical taste is more personal than movies or anime or books. So it depends on the mood or on your personality. For example I wouldn't recommend Joy Division to anyone only because I love them... Someone not in the right mood for that kind of music wouldn't like them at all.

Regarding books, I'd like to suggest tons of Italian books that are not known abroad, especially Italian poetry is great.
