The gift certificate idea is a great one, especially if you and him are just acquaintances. When unsure, one of these should do the trick because you won't risk buying him a horrendous gift when he could buy it himself. The problem is, a gift certificate from what store/shop? Do you know some of his interests? This might help determine which store to buy the certificate at.
