I prefer to digress. I think The Big O Season 1 (and I do mean Season 1) is very much worth buying or if one is unsure, at least rent the series or borrow from a friend. It's a slow-paced series but not dull or utterly dragging (at least to me).

The series is a bit more story-driven but there is action sequences that appear when appropriate (usually near the end). Yes, it involves robots, but surprisingly, this series is not a full-blown all robot fest.

If you want the summary, here it is: (taken from AnimeNewsNetwork)

40 years ago everyone in Paradigm City lost their memories, and have since rebuilt. The Rich Live in comfortable domes while the poor live in the ruins of the pre-event city. Roger Smith is a negotiator and also the pilot of a massive relic, the Megadeus (Giant Robot) known as "Big O". With the help of his Butler/Mechanic Norman Burg and the Android R. Dorothy Wayneright, Roger Smith protects the city and its people from the many forces that threaten them. And as the past slowly resurfaces Roger is forced to confront the memories and the people who desperately seek to acquire them.
Paradigm City is a place without a past. 40 years ago, something happened that wiped the memories of everyone in it. Unfortunately, the people of Paradigm City were very busy before then, making Megadueses(giant robots) and monsters. People who were born after the memory wipe are gaining/recovering memories of the past and using them to build newer threats. Roger Smith keeps Paradigm City safe with the help of The Big O (a faithful giant robot), his butler Norman and the android Dorothy, Roger keeps Paradigm City safe. As problems mount and more memories surface, Roger's past and Paradigm's future begin to become suspect...

Music is fantastic too.
