A lot of people hated it because of the Junction system. The problem with the Junction system wasn't that it was crap, or difficult to understand, but just that the tutorials on it were lengthy, boring and frankly pretty confusing really. I actually think that the junctioning of magic was a neat idea... It's sad it had to go really. Beyond that, some people weren't taken with the story... I think the whole Psuedo-Futuristic world coupled with the sorcerresses and such things just wasn't appealing to many people. FF8 was blessed in that it didn't have voices mind you: Imagine the cliched. horrid voice that Selphie would be given... and Rinoa tended to be enough of a drip without a voice-actress to mess up the role.

Generally, I think FF7 attracted a lot of people to the series that it wouldn't have usually... It was far more "Final Sci-Fi" than any of the other games, and that appealed to a wider "I dislike too much beardy weirdy stuff" crowd. FF8 just didn't cater for these people enough...
