Well, no, I think you pulled it off well enough so it just adds to the emotional mood of it. Rather than seeing just the fire and thinking "Oh wow, he certainly likes to show off!" I thought "OH NO!!! THAT MAN WITH THE FUNNY HAT IS GOING TO DIE!"
