What if there were more cut-scenes!

I would like them very long, because they tell everything about the game. It's the main game-play.Thats why we buy the game right, for the story-line and the graphics. What if they didn't have cut-scenes, I don't think you would buy the game. The cut-scenes show how the characters feel, and whats happening{realistically}.

I don't think cut-scenes tell the story or make a game great, they just add to the excitement of the moment and help bring you one step closer to reality

Soul Angel Apr 17th, 2002 06:19 PM

Personally I don't just buy a game for the graphics and cut scenes myself. There are other aspects for why I get a particular game, like gameplay, storyline and plots etc etc...

Looking more to the cut scenes, these day people seem to expect there to be cut scenes in a game and this is also one thing which I think publishers look for now in a game.
Because of this, this can cause problems for smaller game companies as well as ones only starting up, since doing cut scenes can cost more money to do as well as more work, so even if it is a really good game because there is no cut scenes people might just not really give it ago etc...

You have to have cut scences.Where would you put the dialog. You couldnt play a game and have some dialog going at the same time it would be to distracting.Say for example your playin mgs and the meryl is telling you something important and your also watching for guards. And suddenly you miss a important part of the conversation and your lost.Or something happens where your listening to the conversation and you get caught by the guards.Without cutscenes you can't have a real in depth game

I think cut-scenes are good, but they shouldn't be too long, otherwise it'll take the excitement away from the in-game playing. At least that's how I feel. Cut-scenes are just there to show a little about what's happening at that moment, but it shouldn't really tell the entire story. Some people actually complain that there are too many cut-scenes in games and it should be cut down. But, I think it really depends on what kind of game it is.

My two cents-many games rely way too much on their cut-scenes. The best example of this is Metal Gear Solid 2. You could start the game, go to the store, shower, and return just in time to hit the X button, prompting another lengthy coversation. After an hour or so, you get to play! Feel the EXCITMENT!!! And I'm an animator so you'd think I'd like that kinda thing. And I do---just not so much of it!

Exactly!!!! That's why MGS2 is not in my game collection. I found myself actually yelling "will you shut up!!!" on more than one codec moment.

I think after MGS2 came out and with some people complaining about there being to many cut scenes, I think a topic has now started with people thinking are cut scenes starting to take over more then the game play in the game itself.
It seems sometimes that game companies (not all but some of them) are starting to just try and make the best cut scenes in a game then anything else IMO that is, Though I hope this isn't true otherwise the game would be more like a movie then a game in itself

Well in FF the cut scenes are fine, and the same thing applies to many other games. The problem with MGS2 is the codec conversations combined with the cut scenes is too much. If the had cut the codec chit chat down some, the game would have been much more enjoyable.

Miata Apr 18th, 2002 04:21 PM

My chief concern with cut scenes is that game companies use them to fill out short games. The original MGS had between 5-9 hours of game play if you skipped the cuts and 14-20 hours if you left them in. Where is the value there? Great cinemas and hokkie dialogue are no replacement for exciting involving game-play. FF7 used in-game art and cut-scene sequences very effectivly primarily because they were for the most part short, dynamic, and to the point. I think the longest one was also the most touching because, aside from the content, it's length was determined by the atmosphere. The others flew by, leaving you wanting more! MGS2 dragged on, causing you to pray for an end. Worse, you had to watch them or, buried in the middle of video game's version of War and Peace, was needed info...way too long, like this post right here...gotta go

Miata, you don't know how good it makes me feel to see another person who doesn't like MGS2. I was starting to think there was something wrong with me.

kamari-ice Apr 18th, 2002 04:42 PM

The people that said no cut-scenes "ya'll are weird".I mean, Soul Reaver for exp.:It stops when the person talks. And how would you know if he got that ugly if they didn't have cut-scenes.I mean come on ya'll.Oh and for final fantasy x.When you kill Sin how would you know it fell to the ground, by dang imagination.Thats exactly why I am going into the game buisness, they need more cut-scenes.And diffenetly more than one dvd in the package, 3 or 3 would be nice, so you wouldn't be bored when you finished the game. Its just like saying we are at ps2fantasy when they have no logo nowheres to be found.Cut-scenes make the game fun, and sometimes they fight a hard boss for you too.And also, if there would be no cut-scenes ya'll wouldn't have sigs over here.Thats my opinion, think whatever ya'll want, ya'll can have opinions, but I am just saying.

Miata Apr 18th, 2002 04:46 PM

Ahhh...but does this mean you're not crazy, or just a different kind of crazy. What if I'm crazy? Maybe only crazy people dis-like MGS2...what? The Mother ship is calling? Praz-neo gafelnikov! Hahahahahahahahaha! The invasion begins NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Miata Apr 18th, 2002 04:50 PM

Kamari, I agree that cut-scenes have a valid and valueble<sic place in gaming. The problem occurs when they become the game and the player is all but rendered superfluous. I reckon.

Das Mutter Schiff kommt, uns von der horrific codec Plage freizugeben!

Infernal Mass Apr 18th, 2002 04:55 PM

interesting topic..

If done correctly a game could be succesful with lots of cut scenes.
i think a game where the story outdoes the gameplay does work out..a good example is Fear Effect and it's prequel.(psone)
