I generally trust IGN, but I don’t agree on a couple of points – curious to know what others think. IGN review:

We are a happy office. For the first time in all of IGN's history, we can sit together in unison and say in agreement that we enjoyed the latest Mortal Kombat game. Not without its problems, particularly in terms of the unforgiving CPU aggression, Deadly Alliance is still among the best fighting games of 2002. A late night favorite for the last couple of weeks and for a few months more, Deadly Alliance is a remarkable achievement in the history of a series we wrote off long ago. Congratulations all around, and congratulations to anyone lucky enough to pick this one up! - Jeremy Dunham

Presentation
This is Mortal Kombat and you'll know it from the moment you start. A great secrets menu and superb layout earn extra points where it counts. 9.0

Graphics
We know that the characters look as they were made from plastic, but they're great nonetheless. The blood effects and particles are just as spicy, but the fatalities stink. 8.5

Sound
A great soundtrack mixed with typical fighting game grunts. What's with the whispered narrator? 8.0

Gameplay
Finally, the MK fighting system makes sense. Smooth, fluid, and full of strategy, this is the best-playing game in the series by far.
8.5

Lasting Appeal
With 667 unlockables, including hidden characters, production videos, artwork and more, Deadly Alliance has plenty of single player replay Let alone the two-player versus mode. 9.0

OVERALL SCORE (not an average) 8.6

I don't agree...

...I would give it more like a 4. Horrible, and very unrealistic. I remember playing as Sub-Zero, I punched another character in the face, once and he bleeds profusely for like 10 minutes!

whoa, so the game actually sucks?

I don't think this game sucks at all!! I bought it just out of pure love for MK, but it is a true to life good game! Realism is never anything particularly strived for in MK. I mean was the blood amount in the others realistic? I find this game really good and so do my friends whom i play it with. The fatalities could have been better, and yes the excess blood while a staple of MK, is a little extensive(ie: punch to the face) But overall i would give it an 7.5 - 8.0. VERY GOOD GAME

Oh does anyone agree/disagree?

Iguana thinks that fighting games are boring and retarded, so you should not let his opinion disencourage you. Check the game for yourself. ;)

I still have not played it yet, hence, I am not able to say anything about it, but I have good hopes for it. Gotta rent it soon.

True. But, I gave it my most unbiased opinion

I'm just relieved that the game turned out as well as it did. For a while there, I was starting to think that the MK series wouldn't be able to make a comeback. Despite Iguana's "unbiased" assessment of it, I think a lot of people are more than satisfied with MK:DA, myself included.

Well, no matter what, I am getting this beauty for sure. Yeah realism is something we shouldn't talk about when talking about Mortal Kombat. Its all about extra blood and gore.

I am getting this game very soon. I tried the game, and its sweet, very smooth. But I still havn't tried any Fatalities yet. :(

Can someone tell me if all the Fatalities list comes with in the game option or in the booklet or do have to have look for it on the inernet.

I am dying to buy this gem! :D

Now, I have a question that bugs me. Should I get it for PS2, or X Box? Is there anyone that has noticed the difference? (Iguana and Makg, shut up in this one  )

My guess for the moment would be X Box, since I have a S controller and such controller is good enough for fighting games, so the controller would not be a drawback in that case. But I'm guessing that the game will have superior graphics and development in X Box. It seems that I'll have to rent it for both systems to se where's the better deal. But, if anyone knows, please tell me.

Why you telling me to shut up, I mean I work at Best Buy (Media/Video Games Section) and there my boss has it on Xbox and has tried on Ps2 too and he says Xbox has better graphics (for some reason).

But if I had both the systems, I'd get it on Ps2, as I love the L2/R2 buttons, which the Xbox controllers dont have.

Sorry you told me to shut up and I still spoke. Ignore the above post I suppose.

Nope - we're gonna have to get the fatality codes online (or just do it the old-fashioned way and figure it out for ourselves..... NAH!!!)

Why can't you? Because I told you not to? Good boy :P AS long as you won't come with a "don't buy any because both suck" any of your opinions is equally welcome.

And you know I'm just kidding. Since you show such apathy towards X Box I used that to joke around :P But, If the game has better graphics in X Box, the reason is that X Box is a more powerful machine, simple. So then, is the lack of the L2 and R2 buttons the only drawback of the X Box version? Do you actually need such buttons for this game in specific?

If you or anyone else could give me more details I would greatly appreciate it. I haven't got much time lately and I got no idea when could I rent it to find out myself.

Well if you want easier controls. R2 And L2 buttons always help.

I mean, we have Low Kick, Medium Kick, High Kick, and then Low Punch, Medium Punch, High Punch, and then RUN and BLOCK.

Thats EIGHT Main Functions. (Sounds perfect for the Ps2 Controllers having 8 main buttons --> X, Square, Triangle, O, L1, L2, R1, R2.) :)

In that case, buy it for X-BOX. The machine's superior engine will equate to better and longer gameplay.

Personally, I bought this game and i have not regretted it at all. For a fighting game there is a lot to do. There is Konquest mode, which allows you to go through in depth training with all characters (218 missions in all), the Krypt: a location for you to spend koins to get new characters, outfits, concept art, ect. And of course arcade mode which features test your might/ sight. Oh and if you have friends with a MKDA profile on their memory card, you can place bets on fights, and winner takes all!

For a fighting game there is a lot to do, and i've had it for about 2 weeks, and i still play it every day! I would say buy it if you like MK, and fighting games.

I haven't played the game yet, but all that the trailers and comercials show is the cut scenes and it doesn't show much actual fighting. I'm definately not going to buy the game because im not a fan of MK games, but at the most i might rent the game to see what it's like.;)

I'm getting it because I don't own any of the other MK games(I was forbid to play any of them by my mom back in the day), I don't have many fighting games, and Tekken is getting boring.

This game really rocks, but htere is three things that I would like to be improved.

1)morefatalities(one regular, animality, and finally arena fatality)

2) the official theme song was not in this one? why is that?????

3)I would have liked to see more than two costumes for a character(actually there is like 4 if you count the sismiliar ones that just have a color change!!!)

what I really liked about this game is that it was fair in a sense of button mashers could easily lose and all players were of equal strength, except for of course Moloch, which is non playable by the way. Plus the A.I. seemed to suddenley jump high in difficulty after half way through arcade!!!

MakgSnake
Dec 9th, 2002, 06:53 PM
Yeah Matrix, I agree with you..... the difficulty goes way TOO HIGH in the arcade section of the game. And Moloch is like almost impossible to beat! DAMN!

But yeah, costumes could have been more.. but I am quite happy with two TOTALLY different outfits. but Reptile I believe have three, and totally different ones too. :D .....

But like I said before, I LOVE THIS GAME. here is what I mentioned before about the game and would like to add here too.

its amazing! Excellent, the amount of moves you have for each character is just mind blowing.

I cant even explain how good this game is, well I dont know if all of you would like it as much as I do. The fatalities, I havn't tried, but then one I have seen on the "Making Of Deadly Alliance", are pretty outstanding.

Graphics are superb, and gameplay is fun as hell. And there is soo much to unlock and soo many stuff to do...........I think I am gonna get hooked on this game for a while!

Mortal Kombat is simply stunning!!!!! When I first played it the very first day, I although enjoyed it but the more I play this game, the more I love.

There are 600+ things to unlock. CRAZY isn't it!??? Its too good, and just looking at some of characters........ is eye poping! When the first time I saw Raiden....I was like This character is made in the most amazing manner. I LOVE The electricity that keeps on passing by him in such a realistic manner.

Soo many costumes for each characters........
The gaining of the Koins by doing the Konquest and then opening the Koffins with the help of the Koins you have. Its just amazing. I am loving this game like I never thought I'd ever do.

And WOW again, the graphics are beautiful!!!

I've only played one Mortal Kombat game and have no idea what you mena when you say "fatalities. Are those the special moves a fighter in the game has?

MakgSnake
Dec 11th, 2002, 08:35 PM
Fatalities are the ending move you do, when your opponents power bar ends, so you get a chance to finish him compeletly, like KILL Him. They are pretty nasty but always fun to watch!! :)
