Trigun manga question

Please someone, explain me a thing about Trigun manga:

what is the connection between Trigun and Trigun Maximum?
Does Trigun Maximum correspond to the second part of the anime series?

Uhmmm...I haven't read Trigun Maximum because I don't like much the style of the mangaka. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it is the last part of Trigun series...
