Nobuo Uematsu Leaves Square-Enix

Square-Enix's long term music guru, Nobuo Uematsu, has announced that he is leaving to pursure his own goals, bringing an end to a 20-odd year relationship with the company. Uematsu is said to be headed to a new company named "Smile Please". There, he will still pen music for video games (though presumeably not FF, unless some kind of contract is made), but he will be taking more time in Live-Performance work, largely with his Rock Band "The Black Mages".

His activity at the developer has been somewhat lesser than it once was, with recent FF titles containing only a few tracks of his work - Final Fantasy XI had only a few, Final Fantasy X-2 wasn't anything to do with him. Many have said that he is past his best (I would personally agree, reckoning that he was at his peak in the Mid/Late ninetees for FF6 to 8. FF10's soundtrack was pretty horrid in places, though it had its moments). His one track contribution to Final Fantasy XII, may well turn out to be his swansong.

Damn, he is like my hero. I loved all his work and never could get enough of his music.

I currently have his Black Mages album. It is really good and I hope to hear a lot more from them, maybe even go to one of his concerts. I'm still mad I couldn't go to his symphonic concert in LA a while back. Someday, my dreams will come true.

Wow.... it's all I can really say.
I've only played FFVIII and FFX.
But I did enjoy the music in FFVIII.

It is sad though.

No! I can't believe this! Man, I have nearly every single FF album out there...his music is just fantastic.

Okay, but he probably was at his peak, like kupo said. FFVIII's is the best, IMO and yes...FFX was not too good.

Goodbye Uematsu-san. We'll miss you.

It's probably the main theme song...Uematsu usually writes the theme songs of the games.

BTW, nice to see you again Macceh^!!

What I find strange is that FF8's music always sounded better on the PC or PS1... the actual OST sounded completely different to me. In terms of composition, FF8 was possibly the best (FF7's was rushed because he had a tight schedule - it's nothing amazing, but it had some great tunes. FF6's is a tough one... there are some excellent compositions, but the SNES style sounds are a bit discomforting)... but the version that was on the OST wasn't that good IMO.

It's a shame to see him go... I think the quality of the tunes paralleled just how much I liked the games - Perhaps with Uematsu gone, the FF Magic will go with it? (I'll be the first to admit that the series just doesn't inspire me like it did when I first entered this forum... And i'm not as excited about the FF7 sequels/prequels/movie or FF12 as I probably should be).

Well.... what can I say?I never really was a fan of RPG's until at the beginning of April/May which was when I borrowed FFVIII from a friend, and it was scratched so I picked up my own copy, and from there was addicted.... ^_^

Really? That's strange...FF8's soundtrack didn't bother me at all. And I own a lot of copies too ( ). Perhaps it was the sound recording that made it seem a bit...muffled? ^^;;;
I have FF3, FF4, and FF6's soundtracks and I think they're pretty good...I haven't heard them in a while, but I think I enjoyed FF4's soundtrack. I tried to look for FF5's OST, but I only got a compliation of some hits.

Perhaps you're right. I do agree with you, that most of my excitement of the upcoming FF's were for the soundtracks. Unfortunately, ever since FF10's soundtrack was not too good (and OMG, the Piano Collection of FF10 were terrible!), I haven't been anticipating the future titles.
And maybe (I could be wrong) another reason could be because the FF series have become much too similar in regards of storyline, characters (no offense, but the main characters seem to lacking uniqueness), and just the overall game itself. I was really excited about FF10...but it didn't really grab and hold my interest much. FF12 looks somewhat promising and the characters are different (especially those bunny chicks), but otherwise, I only wonder now, "Is it more of the same?"

Likewise, nice to see you again too merylsilverburg

I actually loved the FFVIII OST alot also, and I do agree that alot of the FF magic lay with the soundtracks. Probably a big reason why I didn't like FFX-2 so much.

Overall I felt FFIX had the strongest OST, FFX being the weakest (although it had some excellent tracks). Like merylsilverburg said, the storylines all followed the same sort of path however FFXII does seem to be heading in a different direction, one that I feel I won't agree with either
