Final Fantasy = Movie
I have always thought of Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, and X....that there where more like a RPG/Movie than anything else. I mean you do alot of fighting and different things then you watch an amazing 5 min. CGI video. Then you do some more....watch another one....so on and so on. Most of the time I used to just play the games to see the CGI videos after I have done played the games for months. What do you guys think?

What you said is not that wrong, thinking about it. Especially the last FF game didn't give the player much freedom to move around, but it offered an impressive amount of FMVs instead... I'm not sure this should be called a fault, but many RPG players didn't like it. Classic RPGs are not like that for sure. Many said this typology of gameplay is not enough challenging. FF games are mostly like this, so you can say you like it or not. They prefer to follow a storyline instead of giving opooortunities of exploration or customization. The Bouncer was not FF and it was not only RPG, but it was somewhat the same thing regarding this aspect. The fact it was so short made many people say it was horrible, because it was more like an interactive movie.

I mean....I love all the FF games, but games like Morrowind and the upcoming Fable should maybe change the way PS2, X-Box, and GC RPG's are made. I like more open ended gameplay than playing the game over and over and the same stuff happenes everytime like in FF. But the treat in FF is that you have a epic story and some great CGI videos.

I'm sure after the release of all these new online RPGs things will change a little, or at least I hope so. This means you won't be forced to choose freedom or epic story: mixing the experiences of the new generation of online RPGs you'll be able to get both at the same time

I don't know about the first ones, but from the FF games I've played, FF has always been more like an interactive movie if compared to other RPGs. With FFXI they will be forced to change it a bit, because otherwise nobody will want to pay a connection to play a movie

i think this is a reason why the SNES FFs and Tactics are quite popular (ie. quoted as the best)... i'd almost say that the more FMV they put in a game, the worse it is

Personally I like the way that FFVII was. It was near perfect and for the time really well done. It's CG "movies" Seemed to fit perfect into the game.

When CG movies (or FMVs... or whatever!) are used in a clever way, there's nothing bad in them. They're necessary for the story to go on. It's obvious that when movies are 60-70% of the game, this starts to be annoying...

I dont know about you all, but i think FFX is basically just one big cut scene. Ive played about twenty hours of it, and it seems you cant go ten minutes before you run into another bunch of cut scenes. They do somewhat keep you in the story, and yet there does seem to be far more than im accustomed to. Since i probably wont finish the game, anyways, do the cut scenes just keep continually flowing in FFX and you never really play very long before there is another cut scene? I hear the ending sux bad so i probably wont ever finish it, anyways......

I found the FFX ending to be quite exellent, but yes there seemed to be alot more than usual (cut scenes) in FFX than the previous ff's. This is partly because it was the first Next generation FF and perhaps they wanted to show off there graphical expertise so to say. Of course they are exellent for story telling and the first time you play an FF there great, but this you could say takes away the lastability "I cant be bothered playing through it again too many cut scenes ive just seen." This is the same for me in away but....After a few months maybe a year I just get a craving for it and it become exelent once again.
Ok perhaps a little off topic but yeh cut scenes or no cut scenes I still consider FF to be an rpg not an interactive movie.
