Quick Poll answers needed for Essay statistic

I need urgently to get some kind of proof that my hunch of Instant Messaging being more popular than IRC is correct. So which do you REGULARLY (at least four hours every week) use? I'll probably totter off and get some other sites in on this, because a gaming site will be skewed.

This is for a 2500 word essay on “To what extent is the language used in Instant Messaging conversations divorced from other modes of written and spoken conversation”, all due in on Thursday (my motivation is at an all time low as far as education goes ). If you think you have any additional opinions that may help, don't be afraid to post.

I have used IRC before, but not too much, I have mostly used MSN ever since it was created and secondary to that would be Yahoo.

I never chatted on the internet and probably never will, just don't have the need. But when I like to the teenagers nowadays in my country, they can hardly spell a correct sentence in dutch. Don't say the chatting is to blame but it isn't helping either it's freaking unreadable.

I haven't chatted on the net in a while. Last form of chatting that I've been in was on a message board, but whenever I feel like I'm up for talking to someone one on one or whatever, I normally use AIM. I do have Yahoo, but I rarely use it. I should really start though seeing they have a radio on it.

I use neither. I used to have MSN, but wasn't using it that much and it was too intrusive. So I deleted it. I prefer emails or forums, where you can think more about what you write to another person. And I don't have all the time to spend hours chatting. If I am using the Internet, I like to browse sites and look for things, or do other things. I spend to much time on the telephone already

What you may want to focus on in this project is not nessesarily one form of chat over another but the actual problems that exsist from using chat programs and their effect on reading and writing.

For example I have a friend who is 18 (im 24) who doesn't type properly or even write that well for thatmatter because she is "messengerized"(i just made that up). She types words as she hears them rather then typing them like the real word.

"im goin to eat n watch a movie, neone want to join me."

She tells me she does this not cause she cant do it properly but cause its faster and all her friends tpye like that so she is keeping with her friends and staying "with it". ( I think she means following her friends ways, and current traditions)

Lack of grammer is a major problem too. I am guilty of this as spelling and puctuation is not a concern of mine when tpying on messangers or message boards for that matter.

And as a teacher myself I can offically say that I have seen LOL used to refrense a character laughing within a student created written story.

Finally you might want to state "that programs like MSN are great for students too cause it allows them the opportunity to expeirence different cultures and different societies around the world. You can strike up a conversation with someone in another country like they are your next door neighbor. If used properly, IM programs can be really benifital."

EDIT: Ill get you more examples when I talk to her tonight.

The poll is just for a statistic to prove that it was wrong of an author to subordinate Instant Messaging under IRC rather than the way round. The actual title is “To what extent is the language used in Instant Messaging conversations divorced from, or similar to, other modes of written and spoken conversation”

well its divorced from it cause its basically a language of its own. NE = any for example. Plus dont forget about the leet speak often associated with instant messagers and videogames. numbers and symbols for letters.

1337!

I did a paper just like this in university.

I used both, messengers and IRC. I started using IRC, then got messengers. They're also for different purposes.

Well I am late for voting, sorry!

In any case, I have always been a a big IRC user; the kind of help you can find in channels about programming or web development has proved invaluable many times to me. On the other hand, I hardly use messengers at all, even though I have a couple of active accounts.

I use trillian. It combines Yahoo, MSN, and AIM. You should check it out. Btw, what the heck is an IRC? It's shown as an option to log into in Trillian alongside yahoo, msn, and aim, but I don't even know what it is! X_X I feel dumb

Sorry Red, I'm too lazy to explain in my own words, but you can try the wikipedia entry, that in any case will be more interesting and useful to read
