haha i'd like to see Otacon die in MGS3 instead of someone close to him, for 2 reasons.

I dont like him, and to try and NOT copy the same story line from MGS1 and 2, if the story is another Clone, I swear i'll hate MGS, forever! (well, maybe not that much lol)

O_O! Dude! Talk about twisted. >_> There are some freaky peoples on this planet, I tell you what.

I've referred to myself as an 'otaku' on a couple of occasions.. though I've never been "called" one.. *shrugs* ..I guess I don't really care too much.. the westernization of the word pretty much just meant 'anime fan' for a good long while, and since I've never found myself obsessively staring at anime girls' perfect skin, watching videos and hissing at daylight, or chopping up any poor children, I don't think the meaning of the word is really effective in describing me, or most anyone else in the US who likes anime in the 'average' sense.

Still, this is good info to have. Thanks for the clarification, Meryl! I sure as heck won't be using that word to describe myself any more.

Though I've never referred to myself as "otaku", I also never used the word because I never thought I was one in the "westernized" sense. But after I found out about it, I was like "Whoa, I'm glad!"
Of course, if you don't care, using it in the US is perfectly fine...since it's already been fixed as the word to describe "anime gurus" and not many people know what the real meaning is. I just don't know if using it in Japan or in front of a Japanese person would be a good thing though. ^^;;

Makg, ssjtrunks, mark0: I actually forgot about the whole Otacon thing and how he got his name. ^^;;; Thanks for bringing it up.

I'm really happy to hear that my info was useful for those who didn't know about it.

I sit with a japanese girl every day at lunch. Her name in Fumiko, and she called me an otaku, in the sence that i liked anime a lot, and was really good at drawing it. So i guess that by now it kinda has a lighter meaning in Japan as well.

One would hope that it has changed to at least a somewhat lighter note. Slavish adherence to past superficial establishments is a sign that one has nothing better to do. And I'd like to think that the Japanese Anime' community that I've come to be so closely associated over the years has a lot better to do than permanently associate a word with a sick man who liked anime ten or fifteen years ago.

Yeah, like I said in an earlier post, the word probably lightened up by now, but I only wanted to share this information just so that everyone can know the real meaning of otaku. I mean, there might be still some people who feel edgy hearing the word (that Chika's Otaku 101 was last updated around '98) but now that something such as that probably hasn't occurred in a while, the meaning has lightened up.
There are still some very odd and delusioned people in Japan though...especially teens nowadays. Some teens run away from home, skip school and just stay in an run down room and do nothing but watch anime and play videogames everyday. I'm sure that maybe these type of people would be called "otaku" but really, they're probably just lazy kids.

I don't skip school but when I am home that's mainly what I do, play videogames and watch anime. I just refer to myself as kinda lazy, which I have no problem admitting it.

You don't need to thank me I only thought about after they had mentioned it, but I will accept it anyway since I don't get to talk to you much. Yes, your information seems to be very helpful to lots of people here other than me.

Sorry but this is the Anime forum, where topics and posts should be just about anime/manga. You should post this question in the Metal Gear Solid forum.

surely it depends on the context from which the word is being used.
