Building the perfect shooter list
My list of shooting games is fast becoming formidable. This is definitely my favorite genre now and I’m now completely obsessed with owning all of the best shooters out there. There are a few that I am considering:
1. Dead To Rights (https://www.deadtorights.com/) ~ this has been re-released for about 20 bucks as a “classic” of shooters and is often compared to Max Payne. It also just came out on PC, so I'm curious to see how it compares to the Xbox version. 2. Half-Life (https://half-life.sierra.com/) ~ I'm already excited about HL2 just from reading about it.. But I never played the original on console or PC. 3. True Crime (https://www.activision.com/microsite/truecrime/) ~ now that it's out I've heard mostly disappointing opinions. Hope it's not as bad as what I've seen people say so far. So those are a few of the ones I’m looking at right now. Any feedback would be cool. Also, I have listed below all the shooters I already own and others I plan to get. Shooters I Have: XBOX: Ghost Recon Kill Switch Halo Splinter Cell 007 Nightfire The Thing Hitman 2 Time Splitters 2 Unreal Championship Max Payne Indiana Jones: Emperor’s Tomb Return To Castle Wolfenstein Enter The Matrix Brute Force Conflict: Desert Storm PS2: GTA3 GTA Vice City SOCOM Navy Seals Medal of Honor Frontline The Getaway Metal Gear Solid 2 Time Splitters Unreal Tournament Gamecube: Metroid Prime Resident Evil Zero Sum Of All Fears PC: Max Payne 2 NOLF2 Call Of Duty TRON 2.0 Mafia RTCW Tides of War Medal Of Honor Allied Assault / Spearhead Battlefield 1942 / Road To Rome Soldier of Fortune 2 Vietcong Rainbow Six 3 Iron Storm Redneck Rampage Tomb Raider III Shooters to get: Halo 2 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. MOH Rising Sun Far Cry SOCOM 2 DOOM 3 Half Life 2 S.W.A.T. Global Strike Team DX: Invisible War Metal Gear Solid 3 Hitman 3 |

Can GTA3 and GTA:VC really be considered shooters?

Don't see the original Deus Ex on your list anywhere. At £5 a go in the UK, it can't be very expensive elsewhere either. Believe me, Deus Ex is indispensible, partly because you can play it pretty much anyway you want to. I'm playing through at the moment, and sneaking around with my riot prod and tranquilizer darts. Another time, i'd be laughing manically as I flamethrow another trooper to death and shoot the guns out the hands of my enemies ( ). And while you're at it, get a copy of System Shock 2. Yes, it is so rare that you'll probably have to kill for it, but its probably worth it. Scary Computers and Zombies may give you nightmares, but the graphics engine is probably capable of doing the same thing nowadays!
Aside from that, you've got a respectable list. What the true fan would have, however, is a healthy dose of history (or herstory if you want to be a raving feminist) No Quakes, Dooms or Unreals (Single Player Unreal 1 that is) bring your list down a bit. Yes, they're barely playable now (perhaps a little harsh, I played through Quake II recently and it was fairly cool). If you want to be really clever, look out for the real oddities: Wolfenstein 3D, System Shock 1, that kind of thing. The Thief Series is also worth a look, if the whole shooting bit gets a bit repeatative... Hell, you could even track down Daikatana if you want to find out some real history (hehe... Jon Romero, we hardly knew yea...) And you should play Half-Life. To be honest, i'm pretty sure its a "you had to be there" experience though. I'd be suprised if someone who plays it 5 years after it's release could hold it in the kind of stupid, nostalgia infected ideals that someone who played it then could do. Yes, i'm talking about myself. And no, i don't own half the games i talked about. Or half the games on you list ^_^. Heres a quick list for you (and its in order of preference because i'm really sad!): System Shock 2, Half-Life 2, Deus Ex, Unreal Tournament, Halo, Thief II: The Metal Age, Unreal Tournament 2003, Quake III Arena, Thief I: The Dark Project, Unreal, Tribes II (presumably so I can moan that vehicles weren't Halo's idea), Unreal II. (and Archimedean Dynasty if you wish to be really obscure. And you count submarines with guns as a form of "shooter") I've also played quite a bit of: Aliens Vs Predator 1+2, Doom, Quake I+II and Serious Sam I+II. And i'm looking foward to getting: Deus Ex 2: Invisible War (and us Europeans are waiting 2 extra months for it ), Half-Life 2, Thief III and probably some others. But then, who reads this crap anyway! And I also like: Hamsters, Candy Floss, Cookies and Electric Prods. Bzzzt!

Trunk, I totally feel ya on Halo ~ best FPS ever. You guys just gotta play Return to Castle Wolfenstein Tides of War on Xbox, or RTCW Enemy Territory on PC (the_artist, if you play all the way through RTCW on Xbox, it unlocks Wolfenstein 3-D, so I guess I could add that one to my list, since I unlocked it!)
Has anybody played Dead To Rights on PC yet? |

My favorite old school shooter is Perfect Dark for N64
I really like Half Life: Team Fortress Classic and Counter Strike for PC. My favorite multiplayer game is 007: Agent Under Fire. Using the jet pack and grappling hook to boost and zip around the levels is like playing a spider man style deathmatch. |
