Too expensive?
Do you think anime is too expensive? After all, they're mainly for a younger audience (people from 10 to 25, more or less), but buying them costs a lot of money. If you want to get an original box set, you have to pay a lot and not anyone can spend so much for it. That's why people download anime all the time, because they couldn't get the chance to watch some series in any case. Do you think anime is too expensive or not for average young audience?

It is pretty expensive, sometimes, but I picked up an "Akira" Boxset with the nice cover-art for only £10 at HMV, and they didnt seem to be selling well either lol. It's really hard to find in Scotland too, so I guess they can sell it for a lot as there isnt much competition. Doesnt Bother me that much though.

It is definitely too expensive, especially for kids. Just imagine a 13 years old anime lover who wants to buy some anime DVDs. There aren't many chances for this kind of anime fans to get enough money, because they don't work, and not all parents would agree giving them the money to get anime. I frankly think some prices are way too exaggerated. They should cost less and people would propably download them less as well. No wonder people prefer to get them for free or to get bootlegs if they have to pay 189$ for a complete original box set...

Definitely.
Recently, the economy here in CA has been terrible, and to top it off, the prices are sky high. Yesterday I saw a site of some anime store in Philadelphia and they had Bubblegum Crisis [the boxset] for 70$. That price is more than reasonable. However, here they're selling it for 100$. The prices here seem to be higher than on some other states, and as of recently, it's been worse. Like Hylas said, many people prefer to d/l anime or buy bootlegs or VDCs because some titles are just way too expensive. If prices were lower and more reasonable, then I'm sure that many of those people would buy them instead of just downloading them and stuff. I know I'd buy more for sure... but because prices are hefty, I can't. I mean, a regular boxset is about 150$ +. That just kinda leaves you fried. And then there are those anime fans who are younger... I know from experience that parents don't just dish out 200$ so you can buy Trigun ! Bah. |

Yeah they really are. the highest cash i have had this year is 40 or 50 dollers. and at my suncoast its not even enough. i would love to buy trigun, gundam wing and kenshin boxsets but i never have the money. and i also got rid of winmx and kazza for obvious reasons. (kazza is an easy way to get hidden porn on your computer) so yeah it is. oh well maybe someday soon i will get the cash and buy one.

Damn right its too expensive! I was looking for some dvd's the other day on a site... $85 american for Escaflowne the Movie, then theres whole box sets of Cowboy Bebop $200 american... I just look away at them and come across X for $26, that seems resonable but thats american dollars, so thats like $50 canadian. I really think these prices are crazy...
But, something I found out the other day... I can buy all that for less than those prices and in canadian $$. So Im good for a while on buying my anime but still, the prices are a little steep. But why is it that there is such a price difference?? Like, someone in the US could go on like a 5 hour road trip into Canada and get a whole box set for like $50 here. Very intresting.

Ugh, yeah, anime is expensive. Lucky, my town has dropped a lot on prices..I recently picked up "Castle in the Sky" or Laputa: Castle in the Sky and it was only $22.99 at Best Buy! Okay, maybe that's still a lot, but compared to the usual price, $29.99...it's a little lower.
For the younger audience, it is really depressing to hear many people say they can't pick up their favorite series or movie all because of lack of money. And for those who do earn a little, it's still sad because they get that money very little and just buying 1 DVD can use it all up. That's why I'm a bit envious of those who can download, even if it's not the best quality. I have to get VCDs and even those are pricey. Especially since the seller is kinda...money-greedy.

Very expensive, the last anime I bought cost me around $30 and it was only 2 episodes of the show What makes me so mad is if I spent $60 I coud've purchased the Record of Lodoss War set which include all episodes. Sadly I couldn't afford $60 at the time

w00t I just bought Macross Complete Edition (3 disks containing All Eps and Movies, supposedly 300 minutes of viewing) Plus Golgo 13 for only £35 with Delivery from https://www.amazon.co.uk which is pretty decent priced me thinks.
P.S. Anyone seen Macross? It looked good so I just bought it lol. |

Whenever I go to Best Buy I always look at the DVDs and for the box set of Trigun it was $119.00. When I went to Media Play (A nice collection) the box set for Gundam Wing was $149.99. Of course I have seen all the Gundam Wing episodes and most of the Trigun ones. And if I ever want to go back and watch one I can download one off Imesh and it usually takes around 20 minutes since I have a DSL connection
I am good at saving up my money and I usually save up till I have about $100.00 but I prefer to spend it on video games.

Most boxsets only cost about $20.00 per a DVD which really isn't that overpriced. I am willing to work for it and pay the dough, and I am 14. Just bought the Cowboy Bebop set from Amazon and my next purchase will be Trigun boxset at https://www.bestbuy.com/movies/produc...270&e=11087676 for $149.99 US. If I would have had the money I would have bought Spirted Away today when I went to Best Buy, but I didn't have the money. It is high priced but not extremely overpriced for the DVDs, but they don't fill the DVD's like they should. DVD's should have really about 5-6 22 minute episodes. I know it could fit easily.
*EDIT* Just to let you know, at that Trigun boxset price you pay just $18.75 for each DVD. That isn't really that much when you consider the prices of normal DVD's. |

They don't have offical boxsets for Kenshin yet, but they do have the bootlegged ones. Also, I think most anime retailers sell Samurai X; although I don't know if they sell individual Kenshin epsiodes or not. Suzuki_Fanboy should know for sure.

While American DVDs are expensive, they don't cost as much as Japanese DVDs which are around $40-50 US dollars.
