I've never considered Saotome as a villain, maybe because Boogiepop Phantom is a bit confusing regarding the role of the characters....

I didn't really see all of Boogiepop (only the first DVD, 2 episodes) 'cause the series was kinda confusing...so....Saotome...who was he again? Was he the guy in the very first episode?

meryl, I don't know if you want to read the spoilers anyway, because you've seen only the first DVD.

*spoilers for those who haven't seen Boogiepop Phantom*
Saotome is the boy that disappears before the series starts. Meryl, you have seen the first two episodes, so you know that in episode 1 Moto meets a men-eater demon who's not the real Saotome at all, but he can appear using the boy's form. Boogiepop destroyed this ability, but again, later we see him still going around, visible only to a girl called Misuzu who summoned him, devouring people (he kills a friend of Misuzu).
So, I think the demon is called Saotome because he can take his form, even if Saotome is a different character.
*end spoilers*

Yeah, I know it's hard to explain the plot of this anime, so I hope the reader who knows a little about the series got what I was saying...

Anyway, there are so many characters in that series, and their personalities and purposes are so complex, that is nearly impossible, apart from few cases, to say who is good and who's not. Also, the changing of forms of some of them and the resemblances, don't let you have a clear idea of a precise villain.
