I have joined the Dark side (An OST Thread)
Untill just a minute ago I always thought of FF8 as having the worst OST but I was so far off the mark.
Blue Fields, Fishermans Horizon, Julia, The Extreme, Movin' to name but a few. Lets look at "The Extreme" when it starts to get into the swing of things it does the sorta like tune that's on (to my knowledge) 4,5,6,9s battle themes. All great tracks, sure it has some terbile ones which is probably why I hated it so. You have to put these aside though and listen to the many good tracks it propoeses. Sure the battle theme was poor and tedious at times but there is no denying it was the best FF anyway in terms of OST, Story and depth. All this aside I still find FF9 has the best OST there is too much of a list of greats for it not to be: Disc1 - Crossing the Knoll Disc3 - We are Thieves! Disc3 - Those whom we must protect Disc4 - Hildagarde III Disc4 - Pandemonium Freija's Theme Disc4 - The evil mist, again Disc4 - Messenger of Destruction Disc4 - Necron - Final Battle Disc4 - Melodies of Life Long list It's just a shame FF9 had the worst battle system and lacked any sort of real depth. Of course all this is just my opinion, feel free to post your OST comments.

Some of the piano songs of FF8 soundtrack are the best ever made for FF games IMO. I've never thought FF8 soundtrack was the worst ever, in fact I always liked it, even if I agree that some tunes (like for example the battle track) are a bit boring. But the main themes, as the ones for the most important moments of the story ("Eyes on me" included), are really beautiful.

It's weird, but I was always of the opinion that FF8 had a really good soundtrack. This was probably because I played the PC version, because the actual CD version (and possibly the PSOne version - which I am yet to play) has instruments that... truely suck.
But I wouldn't say it comes anywhere near the title of best Soundtrack. FFVII does the "godamned stupid instruments" thingy, to a far better and catchy result, FFIX shows that filling crap-loads of CDs full of music with around 120 tracks can be done without having a "three bad tracks for every good one" rule. FFVI has a soundtrack that was way ahead of it's time (and the sounds that a SNES can produce, mind you...) as was FFIV. 8 comes around someplace where 10 does. There just aren't that many original or intresting sounds or tunes. Looking down the list, Liberi Fatali, Julia, Movin', Eyes On Me, The Legendary Beast, Maybe I'm a Lion and The Extreme are the only tracks that really strike me as trying to create and intresting sound. The rest just sound half-baked, average and un-intresting... and the worst thing? these are the tracks that are playing all the time *grr*

lol yes you are indeed both right, especially with your assumption of FFVI I think that is right up there with the best of the modern releases. The little I've heard of FFIV is also quite exceptional (hopefully play this one properly some day).
I've always wanted to hear some of the spin off soundtracks "Relax with Final Fantasy" and titles like that but being from the UK its hard enough finding the OST's infact only place I can find is two hours drive away EDIT: Just to add I like the FFXI stand Artists and the Moogles and flak cannons made me laugh
