What do you think will be the next major technological advancement?
If I start thinking about this subject, my imagination zaps me too far into the future when games will be so realistic there will be practically no distinction between the game and reality. I can’t bring myself down to a more currently reachable concept. In the meantime, there must be
Some major new improvement right around the corner that will give us a reason to ooh and aah. Will it be more interactive environments? Photo-realistic graphics? Larger worlds? Longer games? What do you think it will be first? |

This isn't really to FF related so I'll move it to general chat
As for what the topic is about maybe in future games you'll be able to smell and taste your surroundings as you play the game

those peripherals would no doubt be expensive. I can imagine some type of helmet or mask.

Being able to stick your tongue into some guy you just shot sounds like fun, though. PS3 might be the next big leap. PCs don't leap, they just take small steps with each new 3D card. Damn things come out every other month. |

a good thought Soul Angel. I for one would buy it; if it were to enhance overall experiance of a game.
Interesting topic..how about motion sensors that allowed the player to wave a baton type peripheral as a weapon..they could revive the whole Bushido Blade series with something like that. Quote:

What I Have Dreamed
What I Have Dreamed Of..... That Is Thought About In The Past Has Turned Into Reality. I Have No Idea How. And Yeah It May For Sure Sound Funny Or Exagerated, But Still.
And There Are Alot Of Things That I Imagine......Still. And Just A Feeling That They Will Come To Life (Just The Way I Wanted Them To Be)

Sssnake posted some choice bits about the PS3 in the other consoles forum, I believe.
Speaking of that, I think that the next "big" move for games technologically will be CG quality real-time gameplay graphics. And 10.2 capable sound for consoles/computers. I don't think that actual taste or smell could be simulated unless the computer somehow hooked directly into the brain to simulate such things by stimulating the taste and smell senses directly. That's possible, I'm pretty sure.. but a ways off. Say 2060? We'll all be too old to get 'em by then, most likely. But then again who knows, by then we could have discovered the cures for a wide range of diseases and aging problems.. *shrugs* On an off note, those of you who would enjoy a glimpse at the "probable" technological future should go see Minority Report somehow.. In the making of that film they actually consulted with professionals/inventors/generally smart guys to see what kind of technology is likely to be developed and CAN be developed in the not-so-distant future. Just thought I'd mention that.

As for games, I think more likely what has been already mentioned... some kind of virtual reality... but then, what if you get shot? Do you imagine a game so realistic you could actually feel the pain of a gun shot? (I know it's stupid, just thought about that )
As for now, there has not been really big jumps in game consoles... only better graphics and resolution, but not much else...... probably in a PS3 you'll be able to play a game with graphics just like the ones you see in a full motion video in games like Onimusha or FFX......

Ya I got the new sprint cell phone and it kicks major arse! You can hook up a camera and take pictures with it, I have no clue how and never will but it is still tight. You can play 32 bit games on it which is sweet, Surf the internet and do anything on it!! So that is a major advancment on tech!

Well, at least there are two types of game technology advancements: 1. consoles 2. game engines. While we're waiting for the PS3 and the "ZBOX", at least game engines are being improved for the current consoles. I don't know if anyone has heard of it, but a game coming out called HAVEN is supposed to be utilizing a brand-new technology. The website describes it better than I could:
Haven: Call of the King is the story of a young hero's epic journey to free his enslaved people from the clutches of the evil Lord Vetch. Using Traveller's Tales' advanced T-Total gaming engine, which allows a multitude of genres to be seamlessly integrated into one game, Haven: Call of the King features many gameplay styles - platforming, turret-based shooting, boat and land vehicle racing, arena combat and space exploration. Players will travel through lava-filled subterranean mines, then race across oceans in jet-powered speedboats to pilot spaceships for interplanetary dogfights - all without a break in gameplay. Available Winter 2002, Haven: Call of the King is poised to transcend the boundaries of interactive technology. https://www.midway.com/futuretense_cs...shot_2_lrg.jpg https://www.midway.com/futuretense_cs...shot_3_lrg.jpg https://www.midway.com/futuretense_cs...shot_4_lrg.jpg It's not holographic, but I'm looking forward to being able to explore massive maps without loading interrruptions. When I read about this, I realized that they can still be improving game technology while we wait for more powerful consoles. |

Unless I'm mistaken, Midway usually puts out games for all consoles. However, on the website (https://www.haven.midway.com/) all I saw was the PS2 icon, so I'm not sure.

I remember seeing on TV once that some people in Japan were trying to make a game, which was voice activated or something? Instead of using game controls you just use your voice to give the commands etc...
