This is a great thread, since I've always wanted to learn Jap. myself *can't wait until college ^-^;*. Anywho, on Graal, the server Shaded Legend where I am GP, the co-owner Evil Poptart (great name =P) is very fluent in Japanese. He like writes out entire sentences but never translates it for us, even the little 2 word replies. Some of the stuff he did tell us mean seems a lil' different but pretty close. Maybe I'll post some of the stuff he says for some translation Annnd, what else did I want to write...Oh yeah, can anyone recommend some good books that teach Japanese, I've tried looking around the internet a while back but that was a waste of time...
As for "shimatta", that's pretty funny that you mentioned that, because it became a big joke between my friends and I. We were watching the first ep. of Trigun at the Anime Club and the guy forgot to bring his gun so he yelled that out and the subtitle said,"Oh, sh*t!" Lol...anyways, keep the lessons coming Reid, I'm learning lots |

A lot of fansubbers interperet the actual words differently (how they think it would be more appropriate), so that might be why it's different.
If shimatta was used when forgetting something it's a pretty western concept to use s**t or d**n to express yourself, so it works either way. |

Hmm....that's true, Reid. But what about this? The anime, Fruits Basket.....there's this guy who always says "Kuzo nezumi". So.....does that mean, "Damn mouse" or "Sh*t mouse"? I mean, when I was reading the subtitles.....a lot of them read "Damn" but there's a couple of times when it read "Sh*t". So, I guess it goes either way, eh?

I guess.
That's tricky. To really understand this you'd probably need a better knowledge of the languages more complex workings than either of us has. One of the hardest parts of learning a language is thinking that if it works in your language, then it does for the other (if that is worded well enough). |

Heh, that's pretty funny. But this wasn't a fansub, it was Poineer or whichever company brought it to America, I forget. x-X; Anyway, it's not that surprising that it could mean more than one thing since thats the case in a lot of Japanese to American translation.

Actually, shimmata is what you would say if you messed up, like forgetting something, or stubbing your toe.
I think that's right. But if you say that something tastes like sh*t, then you would use different words. It takes a while to learn 'em all.

I was wondering: does anybody knows where to get COMPLETE kanji fonts, or at least a software that allows you to use kanji with graphics programs like Photoshop?
I've tried NJStar and Kanjikit, but they suck for using kanji in graphics, they're only good for writing stuff like Microsoft Word documents, but with Japanese ideograms. |

I think you can find a way to change your keyboard so the letters make different kanji and hiragana, in Windows XP, kind of like a Japanese keyboard.
But, I don't actually know how, just one of my buddies uses it, so it's somewhere in the install files I guess. |

Hey, I was looking through really old forum topics and I found this from last year.
Would anyone be interested if I kept posting lessons? I just sort of fell off putting them up and I could use a place to practice Japanese and pass it on if anyone would like that? Gimme some feedback if anyone would be so obliged. |
