Wii Selling, But nothing changes.
First I want to start by saying this is not an attack against the Wii. I think it can be a fun system under the right situations.
I have a question for everyone and its a question that I can't seem to answer or even come up with an explanation. Why is that even though the Wii continues to sell a huge amount of consoles does the gaming industry not seem to change. Is it just me or do other people see this too. I mean Wii is dominating in the sales. Nobody will argue that. However when you look at the gaming industry as a whole it seems that nothing has changed. Why is it that if the Wii is such a money maker that more developers don't put more effort in the way of the Wii? Way to go Nintendo though, you hit a gold mine.

LOL, a buddy of mine and I were just having a conversation on this. And while I don't know the exact answer, I think it really boils down to two words:
"Family Friendly" The Wii is marketing itself as a family friendly, all ages type of console. So the money makers (aka the parents, older people) are willing to pay up because of this. Also, the Wii is the cheapest out of all 3 consoles on the market. Due to this family fun reason, I think developers are trying to stay away from anything too offensive which is why a truckload of minigame-esque games are on shelves and being developed. But I also feel developers don't mind since this is a fast way to earn money since they know families will pick up these types of games so the whole family can play. As for Nintendo developed games and characters (like Mario), these sort of characters are even more acceptable now; when Mario Kart Wii came out, I saw a grandmother at Best Buy pick up the game along with steering wheels, telling the sales clerk that she and her family (mom, dad, grandkids) were going to play together.

The Wii is the first system that really markets itself to casual gamers, in effect its changed the industry as a whole - but only when it applies to itself. Its been able to grow because its tapped into a huge cash cow market. The Wii hasn't really taken or stolen many gamers from other consoles but basically created new users/gamers by expanding the market. Instead of just taking a larger piece of the pie, they made the pie bigger and had their share too.
Success of games like Wii Fit would have never happened if the Wii did not have this new legion of casual gamers. |
