for me its either Final Fantasy 6, or Final Fantasy Tactics. They have the better stories, but Tactics probably edges it due to being a totally fresh type of game by comparrison.
Fave Chars: Ramza and Relm We have a Final Fantasy Sub-Forum BTW

My Favorite Final Fantasy games would have to be 8, 10, & 10-2 because they had a good story line and like you said Link the adventure and romance, My favorite character from 8 is Rinoa, 10 is Tidus and Yuna, 10-2 Yuna and Paine

Mine would have to be FFVII. I loved the story and the magic system. The graphics were top notch at the time and I personally enjoyed all the FMVs. The reason I put it ahead of all the other FFs is that the characters were all awesome and of course Sephiroth. Favorite Character: Cloud
My other favs are: Tactics: Game play wise I think it is the best. But of course I really don't like the Turn Based Systems that much. I thought that the only thing wrong with the game was the ending. I didn't fully understand it the first time I beat then the second time I thought it was weak. Favorite Character: Ramza X: The best Turn Based System I think in any RPG. A little to linear and the voices, while better then having none, were just ok. The story was good while Blitzball was such a great mini game. Favorite Character: Auron IV: Maybe if this game was originally made for the ps1 or ps2 it would get a lot more attention. It had a great story that was basic and not to complex. Interesting plot twists and good characters. The only problem was that you had level your characters up a lot. Favorite Character: Cecil

Tactics is by far the greatest in my opinion.
The story of Ramza Beoulve and Delita Hyral is simply perfect. Their quest to end a war that has split the country of Ivalice. While their paths are different, they both want the same goal. The music of this game keeps you captivated during the battles while setting the right mood during story dialouge. The job class system was perfect for this game. Raising an army of wizards, knights, summoners, elementalists, and even chocobos. All the characters they run across each have a great background and their development through the game helps the player identify with them a little more. (I find myself a mix between Beowulf and Delita).

Defintly by far 7 destroys them all with the exception of 10, the plot worked great, a loveable hero fighting his mentor turned evil come on it doesnt get much better than that and i don't have to explain 10 it overall had a good story. 7 had the best chars in my opinion all of them were likeable, i mean even some of the bosses were cool. o yes i almost forgot 9 isnt too bad either.

I love VII and VIII, especially for the music but my fave story has to be VIII which I think is the most 'grown up' and I love Squall Leonhart too!!
